Background: The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared its independence after Japan's surrender, but it required four years of intermittent negotiations, recurring hostilities, and UN mediation before the Netherlands agreed to relinquish its colony. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state. Current issues include: alleviating widespread poverty, preventing terrorism, continuing the transition to popularly-elected governments after four decades of authoritarianism, implementing reforms of the banking sector, addressing charges of cronyism and corruption, and holding the military and police accountable for human rights violations. Indonesia has been dealing with armed separatist movements in Aceh and in Papua.

weekendje papa Asia » Indonesia » Sumatra » Banda Aceh

Eerste week  Asia » Indonesia » Sumatra » Banda Aceh

I start thinking it's going to be a long taxi journey from Medan to Ketambe when the kid in the seat behind me pukes before we even get to the end of the road. It's 8 hours on what is known as the 'vomit route' over pot holes, the locals chain smoking and listening to Indonesian pop music full blast. Indonesian pop music is generally crap English music speeded up x10, with a thumping beat in the background and sung by the smurfs on helium. I try to survive the journey by remaining unconscious and sleeping as much as possible. But [View Full Entry]

(There is a blog missing which covers Malaysian Borneo, including Miri & Sipadan. This will be added ASAP) We flew from Tawau to Kuala Lumpur and then had an 8 hour wait before our flight to Medan. Medan is the capital of Sumatra - the furthest east island of Indonesia which happens to be the most populous Muslim country in the world. During the long wait we got Mon's eyes checked out by the airport medical centre and she was given some cream and drops for conjunctivitis. Her eyes had been getting increasingly swollen, pink and itchy recently. After that we [View Full Entry]

Welcome to the Island!

After a quick visa run through Malaysia we entered Sumatra for our final Indonesian stint. The twisty roads and crazy driving on the way to Meulaboh made me see my chicken curry again, the driving here is just mental. 15 hrs later we arrived at Gampong Chot and the Yasyan Bumi Sehat clinic, where we volunteered. info at www.bumisehatbali.org Meluboh was ground zero for the Tsunami, the whole area was flattened and an estimated 120,000 people lost their lives. The clinic is a maternity clinic run by an Indonesian NGO with an Australian midwife and about 15 idonesian staff. The work [View Full Entry]

Kahden ja puolen vuoden takaisen tsunamikatastrofin jalkeen Acehin paakaupunki nayttaa nousevan uuteen kukoistukseen. Kaupunki on todella siistin ja modernin oloinen. Rakennustyot jatkuvat. Nimenomaan taalla maanjaristykset aiheuttavat erityisen karmivia tunteita. Heti hotelliin asetuttuamme alkoi mandialtaan vedenpinta heilua itsestaan. Syy selvisi myohemmin uutisista. [View Full Entry]

Banda Aceh. It's about as far away from Western Civilisation as I've ever been. They even have Sharia law (conservative Islamic law) imposed. I first arrived in Medan; the fight was actually not too bad- bit of a bumpy take-off but then Lion Air's full three-hour full flight service of a plastic of water certainly made up for it. I hope that Lion Air can expand their services to NZ. Medan. All I can say is that if anyone wins a competition for a trip to Medan, just say thanks but no thanks. I had to endure this place and [View Full Entry]
