We woke up at 4.20am to catch our flight first to Surabaya, than a connecting flight to reach Mataram, in Lombok. Flying domestic in Indonesia can be very interesting. There are no direct flights between Jogyakarta and Lombok. So I had few options...with some very lengthy stop-overs. Have you heard of Lion Air...sometimes they take-off...and simply don't land properly....well...we had 2 flights on... Read Full Entry

lifejackets on boat to Gilis?
Hi, really liked the page! We're bringing our 6yr old to the islands in 2 weeks - saw your picture - are there children's lifejackets on the small boat from Senggigi to the Gilis? Or did you bring one yourself? thanks, Jo

Bring you own life jacket!
Hi Marko, I really think it was 80% chances we would not make it to the shore...I had already put my wetsuit and Ma'ri did the same, prepared my BCD...as it can be a very efficient floating devise. With the drifts around...who knows how many hours we would have to hold. My son was the only one on the boat with his lifejacket...his own...and that made me feel much better. Don't think they have ANY life jackets on these boats. We made it safe, but that was an experience...as you may guess, I don't have any pic of it...was too busy trying to get ready to hit the water! It was blue sky, and 2 hours before the sea was flat! Peter

Life Jackets
Peter, thank you so much for your reply. It is invaluable. I'm glad you made it back safetly. I did the same journey 12 years ago in April with my husband when the sea is generally rougher. We had a rough journey. There were no life jackets then and I wondered whether things had changed. You've really helped me. I am going out today to buy my son a lifejacket! We fly out to Asia this saturday and will be coming to Gili Trawangan in August. We have travelled round Malaysia with dive gear. We have flown with Air Asia. Their luggage allowance is 15kg and so each time we payed extra to put it in excess baggage. We are thinking of either taking the fast catamaram to Lombok from Bali, or flying. I am curious to know whether the airline you flew with has a weight limit of 15kg? Did you pay extra to send your dive gear as excess luggage or r u travelling very lightly so that with your dive gear in your rucksacks you come under the limit? I wish you all the best in your travels. We are enjoying reading about what you are doing. Great photos. Thanks again. Jo

Hi Markjo
We did fly between Lombok and Bali. It was 30usd per ticket one way with a weigh limit at 20kg per person. As there was 3 of us, we were safe. I have a BCD and Reg with me, and we travel also with two shorties and snorkeling equipment for three of us...so it's manageable. Beside this we have fly a lot with Air asia lately. I'm generally very happy with them. It's true there is the 15kg rule...and you'de better not be at 17kg. But you have also the choice to pay more for 25kg upfront. If you buy your tickets way in advance it's worth it...but if you do it last minute, conventional airlines are better on a regular basis. The fast boat is aroud 65usd per person, so if there are 3 of you, I would still fly. Hope this help...we are diving Sipadan tomorrow....can't wait! Peter
