So, I have already told you about my monkey, but I thought it was time to show you a few pictures now that I have them on my computer. It is a shame that I don't have pictures of the most amazing thing she does: Swim. But hard to carry a monkey AND a camera into the water so you will have to go with your imagination here. Lets just say that she swims just as well above as under water... Anyway... here goes: Let me introduce Captain Jack (She is a girl monkey... but they thought she was a boy when they got her so now she goes by Captain Jack and lives with a mild case of gender confusion.) No Dan, you can’t have one! ;-) I don’t think Alice or Kitty would like ... read more

Yesterday two divers went into the water for a routine dive. They came up, but the boat could not see them. This was circa 15:00. The search and rescue effort continued well past sundown but they were not found. The SAR operation started again at 05:00, just before sunrise and continued until 08:30 when a fishing boat from Lombok fond the two very brave divers and brought them back. Accidents like this happen from time to time when you are diving but I can not think of somewhere better to have such a challenge. The entire island, all the competitive dive shops included, worked together to find the divers. It was an excellent example of team work and everyone was pleased at the positive result. Apparently there will be a major party later tonight to ... read more

So I started today just like I have started most days here in Gili -- I woke up to a wonderful fresh fruit salad and fruit shake (fruit, ice, blender). I did some Yoga by the pool and set off for my morning paddle-ski (think a cross between a Kayak and a surfboard). Normally I Just paddle the length the populated side of the island but this time I was inspired -- I wondered if I could paddle all the way around the island. I had both run and walked it before and that was manageable so how hard could paddling around it be? How hard indeed. It is about 10K (6 miles) around and therefore takes about an hour to run. Paddling, however, was somewhat different. First of all there is the matter of the ... read more

I arrived back in the Gili Islands a few days ago. I arrived via a speedboat from Kuta (Bali) that I had been on before. I could not find the details at first but while updating my blog I saw a GOOGLE ADSENSE® advert on my last Gili article for a Speedboat transfer from Kuta to Gili so clicked and booked. The boat ride was Tikda Bargus (not good). The water was REALLY rough and we got soaked to the bone. I lost another cel phone to salt water damage… still, it was fun and I was really glad to get back to Gili. There are about 5 times as many people on the Island now as when I was here a few weeks ago - the high season is kicking off. But still it is ... read more

Feeling battered and bruised after some excersize climbing Rinjani I felt like I deserved some rest and was pleased to have the Gili's as my next destination. It's pretty simple really. Three Islands; Air, Meno and Trawangan (Gili means island in Indonesian) which have reputations for family, couples and partying respectively. Air (pron "eye-r") the quietest and Trawangan the busiest though none of them are overrun. First stop was Meno with the Canadian couple (Carolyn and David) from Quebec I hiked with and two other Canadian guys (Theron and Matt) I met on Rinjani. The place was great for relaxing with simple pleasures close to hand. After two days of being pretty much the only ones on the island (there were maybe 10people in total) enough was enough and we chartered a boat to take us ... read more

The trip to Gili involved a 17 minute flight and terrible harassment from the locals in Lombok... Steph, Sally and I were glad to get over to Gili (by ferry) where everyone is way more laid back... The islands -- there are three; Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air -- are quiet during the day and a divers haven. At night Trawangan would turn into a party beach... each night a different nightclub along the beach would have a "party" which would involve loud music and dancing often until the sun came up. The accommodation on Gili is varied, but since the girls had convinced me to "rough it" a bit, we stayed in little huts for about $10 a night. For the first two nights we shared a little hut -- it was ... read more

The Gili islands. Wow, what a place. 3 beautiful, beautiful islands bordered by the whitest beaches and coral rimmed reefs. Ryan and I were a bit fed up with Bali in that where we were staying was not particularly nice and the people always trying to sell you stuff was getting annoying. Not to mention that Bali is dead at the moment. So we jumped on the ferry from Padang bay to Lombok and then another ferry from there to Gili Trawangan ( the party island). These islands are tiny, I mean you can walk around any one of them in less than 1 and a half hours. We stayed in a very nice place a block up from the beach for 4 bucks a night which included a fantastic breakfast. The restaurants are awesome. They're ... read more

Until I run the London Marathon. It all started today when I went on my first run since knee surgery back in December. I was laying in my bed with the overhead fan churning away without too much success. I have not really pushed my knee since surgery for a number of reasons including laziness, being constantly on holiday and too busy eating ice creams. It felt awesome. I was so happy that my knee felt good. I took about a 5 km run around the island. By the way, Ryan and I are on the most amazing little island in the middle of nowhere. It's incredible. The run was all along the coast, past white beaches and coconut trees; past farmers herding their cows and having to occasionally dodge the odd goat in the road. ... read more
