JAVA: Ijen...Danger, Poisonous Gas.
My image of Ijen is a turquoise crater lake with sulphur workers extracting that noxious yellow element...as Ali captured in his blog Ijen - the search for the world's worst job.
But in true travelling, everyone's experience is different, notwithstanding we may visit the same locales, or even the same paths & lookouts.
And when we visited Ijen...that is how it was for us.... Read Full Entry
My wife Denise & I like to travel "on paths less travelled" that capture our imagination, inspire my photography & where we mix with locals & remain safe.

For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. A...more info
Not surprised in the slightest to see the mention of an active volcanoe and evacuated villages, followed by you having booked in for extra time - shame you didn't get to go all the way in to the crater!
A picture tells a thousand words Empty warung, brooding skies, sulphur aplenty - tells more of a story than if this image had been filled with workers.
Grind, grunt & gouge You always provide interesting photos. Great photo of the bee pollinating the flowers.Love the description of the roads. Sounds like some of the roads we encountered in Vietnam after the floods and mudslides full of hidden and urgent dangers. Java looks grand. Hopefully, we will make it there some day.
Lunch 2,5 & 8 I had to laugh -it reminded me of trekking in Dogon country in Mali - would you like chicken for lunch? *open cane cover* which one? that one? sure! *crack goes the neck* 1hr later "succulent chicken" mmmm! don't dare ask for seconds :-0 :-0 :-0
good blog david - poisonous gas- probably brought my demise a little closer but what the heck!
Hmmm.water in the rice paddies means planting season... just keeping you on your toes! As for the volcano, I'm sure you would have gone to the rim if not for the police. At least you were smart to pick a very nice resort to relax at the end of your trip.
THANKS BOB I think rice is an all year proposition, plant, grow, harvest as we saw rice in various stages, hence the Before & After shots, and water drained from one paddy to another. However as it was wet season it may be predominately preparing & planting...certainly plenty of water around. As to the volcano...your comments are noted...without admissions! As to the resort...definitely a good decision...it certainly pleased Denise...and isn't that how husband's prosper?
Aussies only go to Bali Totally agree Dave, sucked in, give me the rest of this awesome archipeligo any day. After my little jaunt into sumatra your blogs have inspired me to check out java - it looked awesome flying over and im a sucker for a volcano anyways :)
