Background: The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared its independence after Japan's surrender, but it required four years of intermittent negotiations, recurring hostilities, and UN mediation before the Netherlands agreed to relinquish its colony. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state. Current issues include: alleviating widespread poverty, preventing terrorism, continuing the transition to popularly-elected governments after four decades of authoritarianism, implementing reforms of the banking sector, addressing charges of cronyism and corruption, and holding the military and police accountable for human rights violations. Indonesia has been dealing with armed separatist movements in Aceh and in Papua.

They say, everybody needs a second chance and so we thought that the island of the gods also deserved one. We were hopeful but it did not start well; as a matter of fact the trouble started as soon as we set foot on Bali. And this is not a question of different cultural backgrounds, as a reader suggested, we had come perfectly along on Sumatra and Java. It seems that for the Indonesian government the country consists mainly of Java and Bali, some attention has gone to Sumatra due to its northernmost province of Aceh, but it seems that east [View Full Entry]

Pura Beji's second gate

After months of anticipation and 26 hours of travelling we finally arrived on the tiny narrow road that was Poppies Lane, Kuta. As the 3 of us piled out of the taxi and began to wonder just where this 'Fat Yogi’s Bar' was, that we'd arranged to meet in, who should come wandering along? Sharon. It must have been part of the Woolley telepathy that she should come along at that precise moment. After hugs and kisses she took us to where Scott was waiting at Fat Yogi’s. We all downed a few welcome beers and tramped around Kuta for a [View Full Entry]

Stan, Myself and Gary were going to Bali to meet up with Sharon and Scott, who were on a 9 month backpacking trip. During this trip they were going to, at last, have the wedding they'd dreamed of for the last 3 years. We'd never actually backpacked before so this was going to be a whole new experience. Originally the wedding was going to take place on Phi Phi Island, Thailand December 2005. However the invitations were designed and ready to post out when the dreadful Tsunami occurred December 26th 2004. The island was hit badly and was virtually washed out. [View Full Entry]

The blog hasnt been updated in quite a while simply because we were too busy enjoying oursleves to bother getting pictures burned onto CD and sit down to publish them on the site, which is a good thing, but as this blog is also for us to look back on we thought we better write up Bali while the memories are still fresh. We managed to get the emergency exit seats for the flight from Singapore to Bali which was a result, lots of legroom ! Customs took ages and then we had a debate with the Customs officials as the [View Full Entry]

From Lovina we headed south to Gunung Batur (Mt. Batur) and Lake Batur. The view of the mountain and the lake as we edged down the impossibly steep roads on the back of motorbikes was breathtaking. Before we arrived we had vague notions of a climb of Mount Batur and a more a well-formed conviction that would take a boat ride across the lake. Our Lonely Planet had pre-warned us about the persistant, often aggressive hawkers and touts. Right on cue, not ten minutes after our arrival as we sat in a restaurant*, they arrived. It's not what you want is [View Full Entry]

There's something about morning flights. Specifically, there's a feeling of anguish as you go to bed the night before wondering if you will doze off or simply sleep through the alarm clock. And having to get up at five sure adds to the tension. All is well though, I check out in good order and after a nervous short wait in the street manage to shakedown a taxi. Today's haul is a mere four hours, and it feels good knowing they will be spent in the hands of a respectable airline, even though the added comfort comes at the price of [View Full Entry]

Chronodementia: 'a lack of ability to judge, estimate, tell or understand time'. I've just made it up but I feel Elaine and I may have it. We really have lost all sense of time. Which is fine until we need to get on a metal-bird for Kuala Lumpur ('visa-hop'*). A good example of our new illness is Yogyakarta: we only meant to stay for a few nights - we stayed a week! In fairness we were ill (you don't need details... trust me) and the swimming pool tricked us. It made us lie next to it and not do a lot. [View Full Entry]

It's a tough life being a small but idyllic tropical island. The weight of expectation is upon you and you can rarely deliver because most times that expectation needs fulfilling internally, not externally. To expectation is added the weight of need and the weight of greed - everyone wants a piece of you. Like the old nag from Raskolnikov's childhood, people watch whilst you are flogged to death by your master, and it is the people riding in the back of the cart that shout the most encouragement. I dunno. It's usually harder to beat Mother Nature than we think. Maybe [View Full Entry]
