Background: The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared its independence after Japan's surrender, but it required four years of intermittent negotiations, recurring hostilities, and UN mediation before the Netherlands agreed to relinquish its colony. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state. Current issues include: alleviating widespread poverty, preventing terrorism, continuing the transition to popularly-elected governments after four decades of authoritarianism, implementing reforms of the banking sector, addressing charges of cronyism and corruption, and holding the military and police accountable for human rights violations. Indonesia has been dealing with armed separatist movements in Aceh and in Papua.

Island time Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta
My my Grandmother has reminded me that it has been over a week since my last update. It hasn't really seemed pressing as I am on Bali time now. I can't believe that I leave today. The days just sped by. I met a young doctor from NY here who just finished is residency and planned on traveling and has ended up staying on this one beach for 30 days now. It really pulls you in. I have been snorkling, parasailing, playing with monkeys, swinging on vines, surfing, and a whole lot of nothing. I rented a motorbike for $3 a [View Full Entry]

Off to New Zealand Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud
Hello you beautiful people! Well, my time in Bali has drawn to a close. The combination of a moderately unpleasant cold and a night of heavy rain has lead me to believe it is the right time to leave anyway. I am back in Ubud, having returned to The Family Guesthouse for my last couple of nights. It really is the nicest place I have stayed thus far, and it felt a little like coming home. Since the buses from Cadi Desa were fairly irregular, I took up some guys offer, and returned to Ubud on the back of a motorbike! [View Full Entry]

Diving in Amed Asia » Indonesia » Bali
Two updates in as many days, you lucky lucky people. Not as lucky as me, mind. I just spend the day exploring a few coral reefs, checking out the little fishes going around their daily business. It is quite simply one of the most awe inspiring things I have ever done, and I am only a day into the course. I am being trained up by a great big Australian guy called Murray. The actual practicalities of diving are interesting, it is a more complex process than I thought it would be, but very easy to get to grips with. The [View Full Entry]

Mountains and beaches. Asia » Indonesia » Bali
Since you last heard from me I have extended my stay in Bali by a further ten days. I didn't really have any specific plans when I made this decision, I just didn't feel ready to leave. It is nice here, there is plenty to do, and it is so much cheaper than it will be in New Zealand. My last morning in Ubud was spent climbing Mount Agung! I was picked up from my guesthouse at 2.30am, and driven to the base of the mountain along with three other hardy souls. There we met our guide and were given our [View Full Entry]

A weekend by the beach Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta
The couple I met at The Family Guesthouse in Ubud asked me to accompany them to Kuta, the big tourist strip west coast. We arrived Saturday morning at a bungalow complex just thirty seconds from '66 Beach' in Seminyak. The accommodation was a little grotty, but it is cheap and comes with the added bonus of a semi-outside bathroom! It had a tin roof and walls which did not meet, leaving a gap through which you could see trees and flowers whilst sitting upon the toilet. Pretty sweet. Michael has been here many times before and knew some of the locals. [View Full Entry]

We had three days left of our Bali trip. The first day was spent chilling out in Villa Shanti, the relatively luxury hotel Sharon had picked out for the two days around the wedding. Some of the guests went back to Dreamland, but it turned out the waves were even bigger than 2 days ago and even experienced surfers were not allowed in the water. I was glad I'd opted for the calm of the hotel pool! The following day we moved acommodation to Legian, near Kuta. However we were not too happy with the place so made plans to climb [View Full Entry]

 Gunung Agung, Early Morning

Our last destination on Bali was Ubud, the city with the highest concentration of cultural sites on this island. It is not very far from Lovina and normally we would have taken a public bus, but we wanted to see more temples lying on the way, so we hired a car and a driver. The main receptionist of our hotel in Lovina made a good and honest impression on us, so we accepted when he offered to arrange this for us. We left Lovina, but not without bidding a hearty farewell to M. Hamel and headed towards Mount Batur. The road [View Full Entry]

Here at last... Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud
Hello people. First of all let me say that I am missing you all. It is weird not seeing any familiar faces, ugly as some of you may be! I have been here for four days now, and it is only started to feel real. Most of the time I wander around thinking 'am I really here?!?!' But I am. I have experienced a little 'culture shock', this is, after all, my first time in Asia, and things are a little different here. There is a great deal to take in. Last night I hung out with other travellers for the [View Full Entry]

The Wedding. Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Sanur
Before the wedding of course came the Stag / Hen night in Kuta. It had been decided that the hen and stag party would be combined as all the guests had travelled a long way and wanted to stay together. It began with a meal at La Cabana Restaurant in Kuta. After the meal we all wandered around until we came across a nice quiet bar. Not for long! The barmen looked so bewildered when over 25 people arrived all at once, that Michelle from New Zealand joined in making cocktails! No-one knew who owed what but it all got [View Full Entry]
