Background: The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared its independence after Japan's surrender, but it required four years of intermittent negotiations, recurring hostilities, and UN mediation before the Netherlands agreed to relinquish its colony. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state. Current issues include: alleviating widespread poverty, preventing terrorism, continuing the transition to popularly-elected governments after four decades of authoritarianism, implementing reforms of the banking sector, addressing charges of cronyism and corruption, and holding the military and police accountable for human rights violations. Indonesia has been dealing with armed separatist movements in Aceh and in Papua.

After a very long bus ride right into Jarkarta I found myself with little motivation of exploring this big city. So I took another very long bus ride right across all of Java and with the ferry to Bali. The touristic centre of Bali is Kuta, a beach town on a peninsular south of the capital Denpasar. Between the main street and the beach a maze of alleys offers every kind of accomodation, food, and souveniers a backpacker might think of, a bit like Bangkoks Khao Sarn Road relocated at a beach. But most of the places were pretty deserted. A [View Full Entry]

Vacation within a Vacation Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta
With only a couple of weeks left in our trip, we decided to relax and really enjoy ourselves - meaning no more bus rides from hell - just beautiful beaches. We decided to spend a week on Gili Trawangan in Indonesia, and then 10 more days in Kuta (Bali). Gili Trawangan is a tiny tripical island with no motorcycles/cars and only 1 horse power Tuk Tuk's (They have 1 horse in front to pull them around!). Anyone can find their own section of white sand beach with no one in sight! For the week in Gili T we sat on the [View Full Entry]

A very Bali Birthday Asia » Indonesia » Bali
Hi all, I know, I know. I wasn't supposed to go traveling again for a good long while. But after no minutes of convincing by my dear friend, Michelle, we planned a trip to Bali around my 30th birthday. We spent about 10 days there and it was, by far, the most luxurious vacation ever! What do you expect when one hour long massages only cost $10!?! Anyway, here some pictures. I apologize if you have dial-up access cause there are a lot and it will probably take a few years to load this page. And not that it was really [View Full Entry]

October 17 to November 15 - Kuta and the south bit of Bali is very developed and was very empty, just two weeks outside of the latest round of bombings so I wouldn't call it a festive place anyway. Back on a motorcycle for 11 days, Bali requires an international drivers license, which I don't have, but I do have photoshop. Alright, it may not be smart but it should at least reduce the amount of the bribe I'll need to pay should I get pulled over. Some dive sites around Bali feature bleached out coral due to El Nino several [View Full Entry]

We took a local flight from Flores to Denpasar, Bali and then hopped in a taxi with a Dutch couple to the cultural town of Ubud, about 2 hours from Kuta. It is a lovely place - the streets lined with art galleries, craft shops, clothes stalls, bead shops and endless cafes and restaurants. We found a lovely Balinese style guesthouse with a pool, and this became our oasis and retreat from the heat after long walks in the surrounding paddies and fields. We left early our first morning there and took a long trek along a river gorge, through rice [View Full Entry]

How I Got My Groove Back Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud
It's called "active meditation". Our facilitator, Selena Bulan, explained that this meditation technique is different from what we usually do at the tailend of our yoga class - where we sit down, cross our legs, our eyes closed, breathing in and out, reciting a mantra. In active meditation, we have to move, literally, and dance, with our eyes closed. Dancing must be easy for Selena. Tall, slim, long curly hair, she generates an aura of natural born goddess. She's a woman who can't be loved and possessed because has to be adored and worshipped. She's both earthy and spiri [View Full Entry]

n a workshop about Eros and the Divine, and its significance in writing, our writing guru, Jan Cornall, mentioned that the principle of Eros is about “being alive and feeling alive.” Tapping into that energy, according to this Aussie performance artist/playwright/poet/songwriter, will help us in our writing process. Meditating, Jan said, will help us utilize that energy, noting that as a writer and practicing Tibetan Buddhist, “desire and longing are intrinsically linked to my meditation practice.” She then proceeded to guide us to meditate - with [View Full Entry]

So from Melaka we caught a local and then express bus to KL. After walking the streets with our heavy packs and trying to avoid touts we finally found the Golden Triangle. As per usual Keith left Lisa with the heavy packs and an iced Milo at a roadside eatery and went off in search of somewhere to stay, clinging onto the trust Lonely Planet. Our first choice was full so after a couple of viewings we settled into our air conditioned room at the Green Hut Guesthouse. We bumped in to Shayne and Charlie who we met in Tioman, couldn't [View Full Entry]

Life Goes On In Ubud Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud
I came to Bali burdened by the images of bloodied victims of the recent bombing plastered in the pages of the Malaysian dailies. I was in KL when the second bombing in Bali occurred . I called my parents, and they were very worried. My dad has specifically asked me to return to Singapore, where it’s safe, no terrorist bombs will kill you (and I was thinking well, in Singapore, you’ll die not from bombing but from depression, heartbreak, psychosis and sheer boredom). My sister, who’s working in Singapore, also dissuaded me from going to Bali. I told the [View Full Entry]
