Background: The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared its independence after Japan's surrender, but it required four years of intermittent negotiations, recurring hostilities, and UN mediation before the Netherlands agreed to relinquish its colony. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state. Current issues include: alleviating widespread poverty, preventing terrorism, continuing the transition to popularly-elected governments after four decades of authoritarianism, implementing reforms of the banking sector, addressing charges of cronyism and corruption, and holding the military and police accountable for human rights violations. Indonesia has been dealing with armed separatist movements in Aceh and in Papua.

Art Capital Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud
So, the boys left for Perth and I went to the arts capital of Bali Ubud. I felt so sad leaving everyone and I think I was the only person staying in my hotel so it accentuated my lonliness!!! Anyway I had a really good time despite this walking about the area. They had a monkey forest which was really cool. if you've played Tomb Raider 3 it was like the first level in the game!!! !- I loved it!! At night at the royal palace they put on traditional dances so I went to see one of these and also [View Full Entry]

Bali & Lombok Asia » Indonesia » Bali
(Dave writes...) Well, we're in Singapore now. We arrived here yesterday from Denpasar in Bali. We spent a month split between Bali and neighbouring island Lombok, here's what we've been up to... We left our hostel in Perth on Thursday 29 January and arrived at the airport only to find that our flight no longer existed. Qantas had shifted us on to a different flight on the Friday morning, unfortunately no-one had told us! They also made us fly via Singapore and we lost our veggie inflight meals... anyway, back we went to our hostel after having said goodbye to the [View Full Entry]

At Last I made It To Bali Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta
So, I arrived in Bali and because I was arriving later than first planned, and was sick of crappy places to stay I booked a medium expensive hotel (actualy not even that expensive 12 pounds a night and VERY nice). There I met a Scottish guy and 8 Aussie's staying there. The Aussies were from Perth and went to school with the son of the owners Miky who was also there. I had a really really good couple of days. The hotel was not far from "Ground Zero" where the first Kuta Bali bomb was which was a bit scary. Anyway, [View Full Entry]

Villa Magma Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Seminyak
Hello, We are leaving tonight for Bangkok. Lisa and Ben and their children, Daniel and Olivia, left last night and we will miss their company. We have Ay-lou looking after Jetson in the villa now, while we come to the internet cafe in Seminyak...... luxury. The Pearls and some of the gems are good and well priced here, so I am going to buy some to bring home and hopefully will come back to meet up with Lisa next year again if she would like to, to design and make some items for sale. I think I have some great ideas [View Full Entry]

HI, We have been having an awsome time with our friends Lisa Ben and their children Olivia and Daniel. The place we are staying in is a beautiful house with staff to cook and help look after the children, and a pool. We are swimming everyday, eating well and having massages ! The weather is hot, so the water is lovely. Have had a few rides on the back of the moterbikes that ben and John have hired, but I am not letting Jetson on then as the drivers are crazy. We are about 15 minutes crazy bike ride from Kuta, [View Full Entry]

Had a ball in Bali! Asia » Indonesia » Bali
Happy New Year everyone! Christmas this year was spent on the idyllic island of Bali this year. We left Bangkok 23Dec and returned 30Dec. Travel was via Singapore on Singapore Airlines. They have me completely spoiled now. The boys were in heaven with nintendo games and kids movies on their own personal entertainment device in their seats. I was quite content and got to watch "The 40 Year Old Virgin" which was one of the funniest movies I have ever, ever seen. The food was okay, C. was pretty tickled with his child's meals which consisted of hot dogs on one [View Full Entry]

First things first- let me wish you all a happy new year, and hope 2006 brings you all much joy etc. We had a particularly raucous night last night. After eating, we watched the first half of Aston Villa v Arsenal. That was excitement enough (0-0 at half time, 0-0 at full time), but then, after putting the kids to bed at 9.30pm, Claire and I realised we were so tired we had to go to bed too. Fast asleep by 11.30pm. A fantastic way to see the new year in. However, we were awake at 8am Bali time, which is [View Full Entry]

Dreamland Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud
Dreamland is on the way to Uluwatu, south of Bali. It started as a big project in real estate from the son of the former president. After the elections the new president claimed the land back for the people of Bali. There are only big roads who are already in a very poor condition becaus nobody takes care of them. At the end there are beautiful big clifs with white sandy beaches. Small restaurants and losmen are build al the way up the clifs. During the day many tourists from Kuta visit Dreamland. At night the visitors are gone and the [View Full Entry]
