Background: The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared its independence after Japan's surrender, but it required four years of intermittent negotiations, recurring hostilities, and UN mediation before the Netherlands agreed to relinquish its colony. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state. Current issues include: alleviating widespread poverty, preventing terrorism, continuing the transition to popularly-elected governments after four decades of authoritarianism, implementing reforms of the banking sector, addressing charges of cronyism and corruption, and holding the military and police accountable for human rights violations. Indonesia has been dealing with armed separatist movements in Aceh and in Papua.

Fiona and I have finally started traveling around Southeast Asia. We spent a couple of days in Kuta, but have since moved onto Ubud. Tomorrow we head off to Lombok. We've seen some dance and some temples and lots of fantastic scenery. I'll let Fi fill you in on more. I'm tired of doing all the writing. Kuta beach wasn't so good. The place is fairly deserted due to the 2nd bombing (according to a local waiter) so the hawkers are even more pushy than I remembered. The place had a really depressing feel to it and we were pleased to [View Full Entry]

Well here we find an interesting little array of pictures! Needless to say I didn't choose these! Yes the scenery is mystical and stunning but please ignore the person in the bright turquoise shawl! Anyway, as you will have realised I have been somewhat slack on the whole Travelblog front in recent months! I intend to rectify this but you will have to bear with me. Lauren is very kindly adding some pictures to update backlogged blogs and I will try and fill in the blurbs as and when. This seems as a good a place to start as any though. [View Full Entry]

Well we left Ubud and Royal Pita Maha yesterday and have arrived in Jimbaran. The hotel is really nice, but we don't get the personal attention that we received at the Royal Pita Maha!!! The hotel is right on the beach and the views are amazing, it's just a pity that the sun isn't shining. We went to a really nice seafood restaurant on the beachfront last night. Marion was a bit shocked when I had to choose which fish I wanted killing for dinner!?!?! Needless to say, I think I picked the juiciest one. However, his eyes were a bit [View Full Entry]

This is a rather old travel jornal, but id like to store all my travel strories at one place, so i copied and pasted the text from my homepage Airplane Sydney-Denpasar Good bye Australia... It is somehow weird, i´m not really that sad. It was a very special time and I will miss all my friends I made over there. Right now the Australian Outback is passing by below me and with every second people that begun to mean a lot to me get more distant. However now there are new exciting things ahead of me. In about 4.5 hours I´ll [View Full Entry]

Well I think I have found the most amazing place in the world!! The Royal Pita Maha has to be one of the most beautiful and relaxing places I have ever set eyes on. The resort is absolutely empty, with only a scattering of visitors. This means that we have been treated like royalty for the last 3 days!! It is a constant source of amusement to Marion when the staff at the resort calls me “Mr Andrew”. This combined with the fact that they will do absolutely anything to make your stay as comfortable & pleasurable as possibl [View Full Entry]

Well at last I’ve finally posted an update to the travelblog!!!! Sorry to everyone who was concerned that I was dead. Unfortunately, I wasn’t just being a typical male and suffering from various ailments!!! Anyway, Marion (French Girl) arrived in town yesterday and I have moved from Sanur to Seminyak. The hotel is absolutely amazing, with direct access onto the beach!!! Also, the restaurants are amazing both in the locality and in the resort. We booked into the KU DE TA restaura [View Full Entry]

Welcome to paradise. Mel and I found a place on the internet which seemed very reasonably priced and turned out to be fantastic. Our Hotel was situated in a quiet part of Kuta in the midst of some beautiful gardens and was called Novus Bali Villa. Our room was more of a suite with bedroom, dressing room, varanda, outdoor dining area and, my favourite, an outdoor bathroom (trust me, going to the loo under the canopy while it's pouring with rain just in front of you is not to be missed, seriously!). As you would expect from this part of the world [View Full Entry]

On our sail into Padang Bai, Bali, Indonesia, we pass low, green hills. A volcano rises majestically behind them shrouded in clouds. The wind blows and parts the puffy, whiteness to reveal the volcano’s jagged cone. Alan and I are taking pictures from the balcony when I spot many odd looking boats in the sea. They are white with leg-like appendages sticking out from each side into the water. They look like white tarantulas crawling along the water’s surface. When our ship gets closer to them, we see that they are fishing canoes. This morning, we are taking Radisson’s & [View Full Entry]

Well I’ve been in Bali since Wednesday night, didn’t arrive at the hotel till 23:00 (been traveling for over 20 hours!!!) For the first three nights I booked into a really nice resort hotel called the Mercure Resort Sanur The resort was nice but very quiet. Mainly old German and Dutch tour groups, but probably ideal as it allows me some respite after Thailand. Have to say I felt a bit uneasy when I first arrived here, especially after the Australian government issued a warning to all its citizens not to visit the island!!! Howev [View Full Entry]

WOW! What an amazing 3.5 months!!! As we boarded the plane last week for our 48 hour journey home, Leslie and I both wondered where the time had gone. From all the wonderful people we met and all the incredible sights we saw, we had a blast! For our last 2 weeks in Bali, we put away our Lonely Planet and introduced ourselves to vacation-mode! Ahhh, vacation! You know it's pretty bad when you need a vacation from your travels. It was nice to not have to pack up and move everyday or cram onto a bus at 6am!!! Now, don't [View Full Entry]
