Background: The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared its independence after Japan's surrender, but it required four years of intermittent negotiations, recurring hostilities, and UN mediation before the Netherlands agreed to relinquish its colony. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state. Current issues include: alleviating widespread poverty, preventing terrorism, continuing the transition to popularly-elected governments after four decades of authoritarianism, implementing reforms of the banking sector, addressing charges of cronyism and corruption, and holding the military and police accountable for human rights violations. Indonesia has been dealing with armed separatist movements in Aceh and in Papua.

I took the bus to Ubud the other day. As we drove through Denpasar, the island's "big City" there were young men with shovels standing along side the road waiting to be picked up for construction work. the roads are very narrow as are the vehicles. Lots of furniture and wood carving shops/warehouses along the road. we drove through this small village where they were repaving the road which consisted of a few laborers working with shovels and a small roller, can't imagine how long that would take to repave I-5! Ubud is this lush, tropical artist's village in the hills [View Full Entry]

A long day, from the 4 a.m. airport ride with the pretty busty blonde NZ radio star to the Sydney to Bali flight with the slightly annoying Somerset teen sitting to my left. Arriving in Bali's Denpasar airport (which is not actually in Denpasar...) I was presented with a long, LONG, queue. One major flaw with the Visa on arrival idea... is that everyone else had exactly the same idea! First we had to queue to pay for the Visa, then we had to queue get the Visa, then Queue to get it stamped, then queue for customs and so on. [View Full Entry]

I had an open air massage yesterday by the pool in a Bali bed and was completely pampered by two women for an hour, getting a pedicure, foot rub, massage all the while staring off at the ocean and feeling its balmy breezes. Later Nick picked me up on his motorbike, everyone drives them here. We went to lunch to a local Indonesia buffet style place. We drove past the prison where nine Australians are being held for drug smuggling - heroin. Two will be put to death. They dont' mess around here. We ran into a road block as there [View Full Entry]

After traveling alone, imagine my joy when I am reunited with DK! Yayyyy!!! When we see each other at the arrival gate in Bangkok, it's like a movie scene: lots of smiling, hugging and muah muah muah! DK's first words were, "It's been a while." It sure had! SINGAPORE From Bangkok, we jumped on a flight to Singapore and I talked for the entire 6 hour-flight. When we got into town, I am floored when I see our hotel room, I mean, it had an actual bathtub and I could use the water from the faucet to brush my teeth! We [View Full Entry]

One of the major events in my Bali trip was enjoying the local food. From the not-to-be-missed (as stated in some travel books) Ibu Oka babi guling, the Murni's Warung, Wayan Batu, Cafe Wayan, Bebek Bengkel, Bali Buddha, Cafe Lotus, Lotus Lane etc. to the less known Biah Biah, Bridge Cafe, Padi to the local food stall without a name on the road sides selling nasi campur, bakso, or dessert. A meal can be as expensive as 20USD or as cheap as less than 1USD per peson. I didnt try the French cuisine here (some said Bali has some of the [View Full Entry]

Marilyn and friends sent me off in style with a lovely brunch on Sunday, wine, champagne, beautiful Italian meal in the garden. A last supper of sorts. Then off to Bali. I arrived in the dark and had no idea of the paradise that awaited. My hotel is in Seminyak on the beach. I was greeted with a smile and followed down a winding path lit with lights amongst tropical trees, small fish ponds... I fell asleep to the sound of tree frogs and awoke very early to the sound of song birds, the crashing waves in the distance and smell [View Full Entry]

I am staying at the Conrad (Hilton Family) Resort in Bali and it is stunning .. truly amazing. When I arrived at the airport there was a BWM X5 waiting to take me to the resort. The drive there was, thankfully, uneventful. When we arrived at the hotel it was to a stunning scene -- a massive waterfall on a stone wall with two massive torches buring on either side -- so sorry I did not get a picture of that. (Will probably be back there in a few weeks, so will get one next time!) Anyway, the entrance may have [View Full Entry]

There isn't a whole lot to write about for our time in Bali so we shall keep it brief. It's not that we didn't like it - quite the contrary - we just didn't do a great deal apart from lounging by the hotel pool, walking by the beach, shopping and eating lots of great food. We met up with Craig and Saira, a couple that we had met previously in Laos and Vietnam and spent a few weeks doing as little as possible. We arrived on the 28th March just in time for the Balinese new year celebrations or Nyepi. [View Full Entry]

One of the very first questions I am always asked when I tell people that I am South African is "So do you surf man?" -"NO, cricket and golf pal." But at least I can now answer with a resounding "Hell yeah man, I love surfin" Ryan and I tried our best at Kuta beach today and yesterday. The only things I had going for me was that I am South African, a stud and have long hair. I achieved more than I thought I would by actually standing up! Lobby is quite a bit better than me due to his [View Full Entry]
