Background: The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared its independence after Japan's surrender, but it required four years of intermittent negotiations, recurring hostilities, and UN mediation before the Netherlands agreed to relinquish its colony. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state. Current issues include: alleviating widespread poverty, preventing terrorism, continuing the transition to popularly-elected governments after four decades of authoritarianism, implementing reforms of the banking sector, addressing charges of cronyism and corruption, and holding the military and police accountable for human rights violations. Indonesia has been dealing with armed separatist movements in Aceh and in Papua.

Traveling is magical. It's as simple as that! Just when you think you have hit your enjoyment threshold, you realize there is just so much more enjoyment and excitement to be had. After having a sensational time in Perth (oh and yes, we did rent bikes on Rottnest Island and spent the day riding around the entire 28K circumference), we flew to Bali, an island in Indonesia. Just to remind you of life as a backpacker...here are a few... You know you are a backpacker when... -You leave a hotel costing $14/night for a hotel costing $7/night so that your travel [View Full Entry]

Off To The Seaside Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Padangbai
Today was a day for celebration. The festivities were already in full swing when I came down for Breakfast. The entire family was dressed in their best and were busy praying and organising offerings - and generally having fun. A feast had been prepared, and as honoured guest (by virtue of being the only guest staying...) I was invited to try it all. It was a nice 'n spicy affair - lots of meaty curries. What was a bit different though was a coconut and palm sugar cone, and rice cakes topped with a sour fermented rice. Walking around the streets [View Full Entry]

decided to go to Candi dasa, a small beach village on the east side of the island. I arrived to a sleepy little village, with no Atm,and beautiful turqouse waters. They built these hotels, bungalows on the beach years ago and harvested the coral to make the concrete to make the bungalows. in doing so, the coral reef was gone to protect against erosion, waves etc and the beach washed away. the hotels are still there, but not much beach, many jetties. I inquired about a snorkel trip for the next day and met a few of the locals. One asked [View Full Entry]

Rp35,000 seemed a good price to pay for a motorbike to save 3 bemo changes and several hours of journeying, so this was the method of transport that I used to get from Denpasar to Ubud. I think sometimes the driver forgot how big I am, and I was convinced that at somepoint I was going to lost one of both kneecaps. I finally realised how the horn is used in balinese driving. It is not the responsibility of the person pulling out to look, rather it is the responsibility of the oncoming traffic to inform that driver of their presence [View Full Entry]

The sound of motorbikes never really stops in Depasar, but it does calm down. However I was woken at around 6 a.m. as the morning madness resumed. I went downstairs and ordered Nasi Goreng (fried rice), fruit and Balinese coffee which was a different, but fantastic way to start the day. I walked down the the 3 storey Pasar Badung market. The ground floor was all meat, fish, fruit and veg and not a place for the squeamish. The first floor was all herbs and spices, and the top floor was mainly clothing and homewares. I was accosted by a self [View Full Entry]

I took the bus to Ubud the other day. As we drove through Denpasar, the island's "big City" there were young men with shovels standing along side the road waiting to be picked up for construction work. the roads are very narrow as are the vehicles. Lots of furniture and wood carving shops/warehouses along the road. we drove through this small village where they were repaving the road which consisted of a few laborers working with shovels and a small roller, can't imagine how long that would take to repave I-5! Ubud is this lush, tropical artist's village in the hills [View Full Entry]

Cremation Ceremony at Monkey Forest

A long day, from the 4 a.m. airport ride with the pretty busty blonde NZ radio star to the Sydney to Bali flight with the slightly annoying Somerset teen sitting to my left. Arriving in Bali's Denpasar airport (which is not actually in Denpasar...) I was presented with a long, LONG, queue. One major flaw with the Visa on arrival idea... is that everyone else had exactly the same idea! First we had to queue to pay for the Visa, then we had to queue get the Visa, then Queue to get it stamped, then queue for customs and so on. [View Full Entry]

I had an open air massage yesterday by the pool in a Bali bed and was completely pampered by two women for an hour, getting a pedicure, foot rub, massage all the while staring off at the ocean and feeling its balmy breezes. Later Nick picked me up on his motorbike, everyone drives them here. We went to lunch to a local Indonesia buffet style place. We drove past the prison where nine Australians are being held for drug smuggling - heroin. Two will be put to death. They dont' mess around here. We ran into a road block as there [View Full Entry]
