Background: The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared its independence after Japan's surrender, but it required four years of intermittent negotiations, recurring hostilities, and UN mediation before the Netherlands agreed to relinquish its colony. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state. Current issues include: alleviating widespread poverty, preventing terrorism, continuing the transition to popularly-elected governments after four decades of authoritarianism, implementing reforms of the banking sector, addressing charges of cronyism and corruption, and holding the military and police accountable for human rights violations. Indonesia has been dealing with armed separatist movements in Aceh and in Papua.

Learning to surf Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta
After coming back from the Gili's I intended to only stay in Kuta for 1 day to organise myself and then head off to Java. One thing led to another and I have now been here for something like 6days! I was due to arrive in Yogyakarta the day of the earthquake but made a last minute decision to stay an extra day so I could do a rafting trip. Thank god I did because last time I checked there were 200,000 people homeless and the number of dead was around 5400 with 20,000 injured! So I've now stayed until the [View Full Entry]

Nusa Dua  Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Nusa Dua
There's not much to say about Nusa Dua other than that it looks like a well kept garden. It's an enclave of chique hotels all trying to outdo one another with the biggest compound, the most swimming pools, the quietest private beach or the most famous celebrity staying there over the years. None of that played any role in making my decision to stay in the Grand Hyatt for 2 nights. Hell no, I just came here cause my cousin saw a promotion in the Jakarta Post. Lol. When we checked in, I saw 'Welcome back miss Purnami' on the check [View Full Entry]

Kuta and Uluwatu Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta
After the bombings in 2002 tourism in Bali collapsed leaving the hotels practically deserted. Major hotel chains have since then tried to attract guests by offering them rooms at ridiculously cheap rates. Today tourism is slowly but surely reviving, though mostly in the surfing capital of Kuta and the cultural heart of the island Ubud. Three things came to our minds when we checked in at the Mercure in Kuta.. convenience, location and price! Normally we're not your typical hotel folks, but you have to admit, 27 euros a night for a double room is stupid cheap regardless of how many [View Full Entry]

Indon'easy eh? Asia » Indonesia » Bali
Just arrived in Melbourne, - Bali was incredible. Most things are cheap, but it cost 15 pounds to get in, 8 pounds to leave, and every bit of food, drink and accommodation was taxed at 10 - 15%!!. The Balinese are very friendly and have a great sense of humour. The check in guy at the airport even said "cheers - big ears" to me. Double rooms are anything from 3 pound a night, and the food (especially seafood) is amazing. The coffee tastes great too, it's a bit nutty. Most things here are negotiable, and 9 out of every 10 [View Full Entry]

To whom it may concern, mainly Nige and Shawna: I am sorry about the appaling spelling, punctuation and grammar in all of my blogs. I can write in 'correct' english when I want to. However while away travelling I have to balance the tasks of keeping a blog, and actually doing the things I write about. This means I rarely if ever proof read, or even think about what I write. So shove your grammar up your nostrils (or something slightly ruder...). So to my final full day in Bali. After breakfast Suni took me to see his friend Alit Satria [View Full Entry]

I got up for breakfast about 8, and was presented with the greatest breakfast table views I have ever had! The only better breakfast view I can think of came last summer in the alps, a piece of fruit cake scoffed down with Dan at the summit of Mont Blanc Du Tacil, but the fear of death and shivering probably made it slight less idyllic. I went back to bed hoping to sleep up ready for the nights climb, but with no luck. For lunch I went to the buffet at the hotel. Stocked up with carbs, I sat down to [View Full Entry]

En route to Bali I had a rather unpleasant encounter with a guy in the mens toilets who left no doubt in my mind that he was making indecent proposals. What is it with all the gay people suddenly!? That was three already in less than two weeks. On the way I also had to stop in Jakarta and wait for a while to catch my connecting flight to Bali. After about 4-6 hours or something silly like that I went to check in only to find that for some reason I had bought, instead of an onward ticket to Bali, [View Full Entry]

Kuta beach
Kuta sunset

Returned from Gili to Kuta. Stayed in small hotel directly in Kuta, nice, but no Conrad! Mind, for $23 per night with air, who can complain?! Anyway, I do have a complaint, while there were nice dinners and fun beaching, this is where my trip turned a little dark... I was in a motorcycle accident. It started with a really nice night out with Steph and Sally... we had an excellent meal at Ku De Ta. The place is stunning, really nice. If you get there early enough you can catch the most amazing sunsets! Anyway, most of the pics in [View Full Entry]
