Background: The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared its independence after Japan's surrender, but it required four years of intermittent negotiations, recurring hostilities, and UN mediation before the Netherlands agreed to relinquish its colony. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state. Current issues include: alleviating widespread poverty, preventing terrorism, continuing the transition to popularly-elected governments after four decades of authoritarianism, implementing reforms of the banking sector, addressing charges of cronyism and corruption, and holding the military and police accountable for human rights violations. Indonesia has been dealing with armed separatist movements in Aceh and in Papua.

say hi to my best friend!
a nice view somewhere in the outback
where are the people?

So we left the world of Oz for a week of relaxation and to celebrate Gina's 100th, sorry 27th, birthday in Bali. Hotel was beautiful and only 5 squid a night - once again we got very excited about the luxury of fresh towels, a bath and a balcony - Heaven! We spent our time in Sanur - more of a couple resort as opposed to the backpackers' haven in Kuta. It was much nicer though as it was only small and by the end of the week most of the town knew our names! This however did become a bit [View Full Entry]

If you have not read my last entry for Yogyakarta, please do. We hired this man, Jack Augusto, to drive us to Jogya to do relief work after the Earthquake last month. One morning we woke up and he was gone. With our van. With our stuff. He operates as a guide in Bali and is often in the Kuta area. We have since heard from someone in the 'know' that he sold our stuff for petrol money and simply drove back to Bali leaving is in Java to find our own way home. Note: If you see this man please [View Full Entry]

Accommodation Review: Ahimsa Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Seminyak
Sorry for the BLOG-LAG... I did not want to publish this one until I had the pictures to go along with it... this is an entry fro mid-June... if you are EVER in Bali, I seriously recommend this place. Ask for Stuart, the owner, and tell him I sent you! --------------------------------------- http://www.theahimsa.com/ You never know what is next. I was planning to check into the Conrad hotel when I returned to Bali, as I was telling Stuart, a guy I met on the BKK - Denpesar flight. He agreed that it is a nice hotel and offered invited me to stay [View Full Entry]

The hotel also had a great pool which was just perfect for Kyle's olympic style [View Full Entry]

Hello all, sorry for the delay in loggs we are experincing some computer meltdowns! We have finished our first stay in Bali in legian just outside of Kuta. The hotel was a large , glamorous if slightly past its best affair. We did have the luxury of aircon, a swimming pool and free breakfast! I know we have made the transition into travellers when our eyes lightup at the thought of an all you can eat buffet breakfast! We ate a range of fresh fruit, spicy rice, noodles and rediculous amounts of french toast. we saw fit to pile our plates [View Full Entry]

3 days in Bali Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Seminyak
Day 1 This is my second time to Bali. Instead of staying at Four Seasons, Ubud, Jo and I stayed at the Oberoi at Seminyak. This hotel is been around over 20 years. I must say it has a lot of character. I particular like the fact that it is right in front of the Seminyak beach and the sound of the waves is astonishing. The garden view lanais is acceptable but it's kind of small. However, it gives you a personal touch on small details like all the shampoo, conditioner, body lotion and bath gel are inserted into small glass [View Full Entry]

My trip up from 'Nam up to Hong Kong was certainly not the easiest or most pleasant experience so I decided to speed through it and do it all in one mass journey that took 2 1/2 days. Arriving in Hong Kong was nice and familiar and made the most of all the cheapies I had learned last time there and did a bit of space walking before heading down to Indonesia namely Bali and Lombok. I decided to head straight to lombok and have a couple of days there staying in Singgigi a little beach town, kinda wish i hadn't [View Full Entry]
