Background: The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared its independence after Japan's surrender, but it required four years of intermittent negotiations, recurring hostilities, and UN mediation before the Netherlands agreed to relinquish its colony. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state. Current issues include: alleviating widespread poverty, preventing terrorism, continuing the transition to popularly-elected governments after four decades of authoritarianism, implementing reforms of the banking sector, addressing charges of cronyism and corruption, and holding the military and police accountable for human rights violations. Indonesia has been dealing with armed separatist movements in Aceh and in Papua.

We arrived in Bali after a wonderful flight on Singapore Airlines. Bali is truly a paradise..what is most remarkable is the friendly warm smile of the Balinese. We rested at the hotel and then went for dinner to Kuta. The town is busy with a lot of traffic. We had dinner at a small restaurant. The fare is mostly meat and fish based. We quickly realized that our staple is going to be Nuso Gorong-Indonesian vegetable fried rice. Mangoes and Papayas are plentiful. We plan on traveling to Ubud the cultural center of Bali where we will stay at the Nirvana [View Full Entry]

With the typhoon over and a chance for a second go at HK's clubs I actually headed home early to get a good nights rest. And I felt better for it which is more than I can say for silly old Steven who beat me to the plane, but apparently not by much and certainly he looked worse for wear. Happy and upbeat that he felt worse than I, we boarded the plane last and stevie took a slump in his seat as I headed down to the back to find a double or triple row all to myself. I’ll come [View Full Entry]

Bali is "tube city" Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta
A hastily arranged (and free, courtesy of China Airlines) 2.5-day trip to Bali was, as they say, just what the doctor ordered. Kuta beach was "tube city," a surfer's dream, and my 6am swim was bliss. This was my second trip to Bali, and I found myself liking it more this time around, despite the fact that we missed the sunset at Jimbaran Beach because our "herbal oil massage" lasted nearly 3 hours. Nonetheless, the seafood barbecue -lobsters, prawn and barricuda- at Jimbaran made up for it. [View Full Entry]

Bali awakens

Kuta Beach “Dead” is the best way to describe this place at the moment. It’s a bit like Melbourne during a football final: everything is open but nobody is home, except in the odd well patronized joint, and the mix of (non-Indonesian) Asian and Australian seems pretty even - more so than in Sydney. The hordes of Western Australians have been replaced by a few Koreans and other Asians, with a lot more Javanese than previously, according to a well seasoned couple I met who have been to Bali more than twenty times. Nevertheless, cash heavy west coasters are hard to [View Full Entry]

Back Where I started Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud
Hey Yall, I'm back in Ubud, Bali now, which is where I spent my first night on the archipelago. The last 10 days or so have been crazy. After I wrote last Lynda and I headed up to a town called Bajawa in Flores to check out some traditional villages. We got a pretty sweet deal in a private car there so we spent a couple extra dollars to cut the trip from 14 hours to 7 hours, and to minimize the number of live chickens and puking children on our laps. It turned out to take two days though because [View Full Entry]

Ok so I'm just putting this up so you guys will realize I put pictures on. The last blog was a half-assed effort at Bali and Gili Trawangan off the coast of Lombok. The pictures on this one are from Kuta Lombok and Sumbawa. This is taking hours so I'm having a (some) beer (beers). Hope you enjoy. [View Full Entry]

Thirty Six aching hours of boats, ferries, tat-sellers, taxis, Bemos and a 'coach-full' fob-off in Bima by an angry ex-millitary man now in charge of a bus company that fired up our Italian's rage so much that the situation required poilce intervention. Still, we made it back to Kuta; town of cheap beer, good food, dance clubs, beautiful bodies and ... Australians. Tomorrow my tourist visa expires ... 3 days before I'm due to depart. Technically I'll become an illegal immigrant or something like that. I must ring the British Consulate - it's on my ToDo list but life and motivation [View Full Entry]

A Priceless Lesson Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud
If there is one thing I love about travel, it’s shopping. And if there is one thing you know about me, you know I am being facetious. Shopping is the last thing on my list. But as a visitor in Bali, I quickly learned that my raison d’etre was to spread my money around as quickly and broadly as possible. It began at the airport and $25 USD for a visa. I handed the guy $40 and got back a handful of Rupiah, the local currency. As I got my bag, a money changer was waving at me from behind [View Full Entry]
