Background: The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared its independence after Japan's surrender, but it required four years of intermittent negotiations, recurring hostilities, and UN mediation before the Netherlands agreed to relinquish its colony. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state. Current issues include: alleviating widespread poverty, preventing terrorism, continuing the transition to popularly-elected governments after four decades of authoritarianism, implementing reforms of the banking sector, addressing charges of cronyism and corruption, and holding the military and police accountable for human rights violations. Indonesia has been dealing with armed separatist movements in Aceh and in Papua.

After a whirlwind trip spanning two months and eight countries, our journey is finally coming to an end. Fortunately, the past week on the beach in Bali has been a perfect way to finish. We'll be arriving at our new student-housing home in NYC around mid-day today (8/13) after spending about 25 hours in the air -- since we'll gain a full day due to the International Date Line changeover. We'll officially have travelled around the world. Sweet! Naturally, things will be pretty hectic with school starting in a week and Steph looking for a new job, but we're hoping to [View Full Entry]

Ubud Last Days Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud
We spent the last 2 days exploring the immediate vicinity of where we were staying. We walked all around savoring the sights and sounds that have now become so familiar to us. The sounds of Balinese music in temples and the traffic down main street (Jalan Hanoman, Jalan Monkey Forest and Jalan Jambavan). We spent a nice evening in the monkey forest where the inhabitants run loose and hold court every day..they are visited by the local human beings who are eager spectators of the endless frolicking and antics that the monkeys put on display. The monkeys seem to love coconuts [View Full Entry]

Last days in Ubud Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud
We are back in Ubud, which feels like home for us. The streets are busy with life and there always seems to be some kind of enchanting traditional Balinese dance or music being performed, which we can even hear from our room at night. We have enjoyed Bali so much that we extended our stay two more days! [View Full Entry]

In my wisdom I decided to snub the tourist centre of Bali and instead stay in a small village called Jasri on the north east coast - I was on a mission to see 'the real' Bali. I started to regret this decision when two hours from the airport Jasri still wasn't in sight and it transpired I was the only guest at the accommodation I'd booked. Although I'd booked the place on the Hostelworld website I actually arrived to more of a honeymooners hideout than a hostel. I had my very own thatched cottage set in lantern lit tropical ground [View Full Entry]

Kintamani, Tamparksiring Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kintamani
After a few days we were ready to head back to Ubud. Our journey back lead us high up into the mountains close to Kintamani. We drove through slopes where there were several varieties of fruits, coffee, and cloves are grown (plantations). We enjoyed freshly cut mangos (Sanjay’s favorite), passion fruit (Kyle’s favorite), and tamarillos. Also on the way back we stopped at the Tirtha Temple close to Tamparksiring where many people come to bath in the holy water that pours forth from a natural spring. [View Full Entry]

Amed Day 2 Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Tulamben
We had the most amazing views of the Java Sea. Each morning we would rise early enough to watch the spectacular sunrise over the sea as hundreds of fisherman would direct their boats back to shore with their catch of the day. Amed is a popular destination for divers so we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to freshen up on our diving skills. This was our first shore dive and it certainly put our balancing skills to the test, walking over larger slipper rocks while equipped in our dive gear (including oxygen tanks). The visibility was somewhat poor but we were [View Full Entry]

When I finally arrived in Singapore after the push and shove match at the boarder I checked into the Cozy Corner Backpackers Hostel and stayed 3 nights. For some reason I had my days all messed up and thought Tammy was coming my second night there. I was on my way to the airport when I had a little feeling something wasn't right and when I checked my watch sure enough I was a day early. What a disappointment, I still had 24 hours till she arrived. Now Singapore is a nice city and all but it's really not my [View Full Entry]

Winding Down Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Nusa Dua
Hey again, I'm in Sanur now, about to head to a beach called Dreamland for the last 3 days of the trip. Over the last week we rode a little Malibue Barbie looking baby blue moped up and down pretty much every road in Bali. Bali really is beautiful but somewhat more touristy than we were used to. I won't write much now,,,probably finish up the blog from home, but I did want to post some pictures from earlier in the trip. Of course, I'm a douche bag so I posted all the pictures to the last entry and not with [View Full Entry]

We arrived at Ubud yesterday to experience Balinese culture. We are staying in the Nirvana Pension with a Balinese Hindu Family. The house is filled with Balinese Batik paintings and furniture with idols of Ganesha, Shiva and others. We have already discovered an Indonesian restaurant that makes good Indian food and had our first dinner of Alu Gobi and Paratha and have been able to move past Nusu Gorong...we enjoyed a 4 hour trekl thru rice paddy fields amidst lush coconut groves and had a lunch in a wayside place of Nuso gorong jack fruit and Coconut nectar. We then experienced [View Full Entry]
