This way to Padang Padang beach. Casually, it's known simply as Padang.
Later the same day, after returning from my trip to Jimbaran, we hired a driver names Gunawan to take us to south Bali. While this may seem like an extravagant practice, it’s actually the best way to get around, and helps support the local economy. Such is the case that after the deadly terrorist bombings in 2002, the drop in tourism was so significant that Gunawan had to sell his home and his taxi, until he could make enough money to re-establish himself.

In any event, Gunawan drove us to a number of prime spots in south Bali that we would never have otherwise visited: Padang Padang Beach (a surfer’s paradise); Ulu Watu (and its famed temple of Pura Luhur); and Dreamland Beach (another surfer’s haven with its mega waves).

Warung menu at Padang, Padang. In Bali, warungs are casual little spots that serve freshly made food, often the best place to to taste more authentic local cookery. Ever the editor, on this menu I couldn't help but notice a spelling infraction or two.

More from Pura Luhur. Admittedly, the omnipresent grey monkeys left me a tad uneasy (which is why I've not included them, or more shots of the temple, here).
