First off: HAPPY CANADA DAY!!!!!
We were up early this morning to drive to Ubud, a town in the rice fields area of Bali. We arrived just before 9am when our cooking class was to start. There was about 12 people in our class. The first thing we did was walk over to the market not far from the restaurant. Our instructor went over all the vegetables and spices they use in Balinese cooking. The market was really busy and it was a really fun experience.
Back at the restaurant we started the class. Unfortunately this class wasn't one where we got to do the actual cooking. It was more demonstrated to us and occasionally some of us could go up and help her. We got a cookbook that we could take home. We got to try many different types of Balinese food. All of it was really yummy. We made things like Sayur Urab ( a mixed vegetable dish) and Tempe Manis ( tempe is similar to tofu.) It was all really yummy. We finished off by making our own sate's. We also got to sample some rice wine.
After our cooking class finished we headed over
to the market on our own to see what treasures we could find. The market is full on craziness and everyone is trying to get your attention and sell you anything you might even just glance at. However, it is calmer here then it is in Kuta. I found a few things I wanted and I think I managed to get a good deal haha but you never know. One lady asked me to pay 400,00 ruphias for something I wanted and I got her down to 100,00 ruphias. I think I did pretty good but you never know!
After the market our driver picked us up again and we headed over to Monkey forest. It's a sacred protected area for these monkeys. We paid the small entrance fee and decided to buy some bananas for the monkeys. They were everywhere! Not quite as naughty as the ones at Uluwatu but more active. They would grab the bananas right out of your hands. The big monkeys were quite mean and wouldn't let the little ones have any bananas. They were a bit scary. The forest they are in is beautiful.
After we had enough monkeys we hopped back
into the car to go and see the rice field terraces. As soon as we got out of the car little kids were all over us trying to see us all kinds of things. That was a bit annoying but I understand. The rice field terraces are amazing. It's such a pretty setting! We took heaps of photos and then stopped for a beer overlooking the terraces. There was a little guy there holding a traditional method of carrying things on the rice fields and he let us take pictures holding it. It was really heavy!
It took us ages to get back to Legian as we got stuck in traffic due to a spiritual ceremony taking place. We all got ourselves ready when we got back to our hotel and headed out again in Legian. We found Legends, a popular bar not far from our hotel. They had a really good band playing. After a bit we got hungry and found a restaurant on the way home to eat at. We were all so exhausted from our day that we headed home.
