Sun, Sea and Surf! Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta By Nessy and PeteMay 19th 2007 Indonesia Indonesia- time to chill out! Apart from going to komodo for a couple of days dragon spotting, we spent a month drinking beer, surfing and reading in hammocks. Bali We managed to befriend an Indonesian guy nick-named 'Bob' who owned a beachfront bar (coolbox full of beers and some plastic chairs!) and his wife 'Nicky'. With them we spent a couple of weeks watching the sun go down over the Bali straight, taking breaks from surfing to enjoy ice cold beers on the sand. Whatever people might say or think about Bali- its one of the most... read more

Hello, sorry its been a while. Bali is...strange. Well to be honest I'm a bit homesick. I thought even though there were bombs here it would still be vibrant, but its not really! We are currently in kuta where the bombs are...its quite big and vibrant, but really just feels so empty. I think parents having honeymooned here I was expecting white sand and bliss...but we seem to be in the touristy side, with lots of surf though. However, I can't complain, this way we are near cheap restuarants and some good night life! Indeed, we have had some very interesting nights. We went to a bar called Chasers for dinner (very good pizzas). They had free pool and good music so we ended up staying for a few games. Headed to the bar for a ... read more

It's +32 degrees (C), the sun is directly overhead ... the low pressure system between here and australia (combined with a new moon) has made swells over 20 feet high - which to a landlocked calgarian look something like base jumping off the calgary tower!! Maybe today is a good day to sit these waves out!! At least we've been to the surf a few times already. With Dad's support in the push off Devin managed about 10 good rides on his first day surfing in Kuta. He decided "surfing rocks!!" --- until he got a mouthful of the Indian Ocean and decided that boogie boarding might be a better option. Phil on the other hand managed about 10 good bails! Surfing seems a lot tougher for an over 40 less than perfectly nimble dude! ... read more

So i thought i would leave my trip up the middle of the australian outback for the time being, as there is a lot more that happened but have now left the country and more things are now happening since i've arrived in bali. Was a bit worried about my arrival and getting from the airport to where i was going to be staying, had arranged airport pick up, but had sent about 5 emails trying to confirm this and they never really made me feel comfortable that they would be there and as i was landing at about midnight, didn't want to be stuck in the airport all night. But came out of customs and taxi man was there with a sign wit my name on, and was all cool and took me for a ... read more

Tue 8th: So, we checked out the hotel in Singapore, did the blog, got the MRT and got to the airport. Got carried away with duty-free shopping (Well, 200 cigarettes each and a bottle of Smirnoff - hardly a spree of epic proportions). Got the plane, didn't get a meal, bummer. And arrived in Bali, Denpasar airport just after midnight. Wed 9th: At the airport we had to pay for a visa ($25 - US Dollars! Before we left, their Embassy website said Brits didn't have to pay!) Stepped outside and it was barren. No buses, no people, just taxi drivers asking a ridiculous amount of money. So we looked on the map, saw Kuta town was only 2km South (Turn right as you leave the airport), used the compass and started walking. About 500 ... read more

My Golden Week trip to Bali was EXACTLY what I needed! I dabbled in going to many places- Mongolia for some urks and Gobi Desert action, volunteering with Habitat for Humanity in Bangladesh, Malaysia’s Perentian Islands for some beach time and scuba diving, or heading to Bali for a week of diving, beaches, and partying. After some research, Bali was the winner! Going to Bali was unlike most of my adventures over the past 2 years. Instead of immersing myself in the culture and being on the go all the time, I relaxed, spent a lot of money, and did manage to see some cultural sights along the way. It really felt like I was on a spring break trip like during high school and college- just what the doctor ordered. My friend Marc accompanied ... read more

Another beutiful day! woke up early around 7:00 and headed down to our pool, which was nice and cool because the previous night had cooled down a little and made the pool a beutiful temperature. we soaked in there for a while and read our books as the heat started to set in for the day. then headed toour hotels resteraunt forur morning breakfast whichis amazing. afterwards we suited up (bathing suits and rashgaurd, heh) and headed for the beach, I rented a 6'1" and Andy got the 7'6", it was definatly a fun boar, but very skinny and not too buoyent, so i didn't bank many rides. but i got about 3 decent ones, and once up onthis board it's amazing, so agile, you can just whip it around. we switched up boards for the ... read more

yesterday Andy got his hair dreaded at the Discovery shopping centre, we retreated indoors due to the all of a sudden downpour. it's crazy how it can be suny one minute and out of nowhere it is torrential downpour. I waited around for about the 1+1/2 hours while he got that done. I brought my boardshorts and a towel to maybe get in a session while that was happening, but surf was all flat yesterday. at kuta if was 1-2 feet, and by thge time it stopped raining enough to go stand on the beach and look at it it was about 0-1 ft. I walked around the mall alot and looked in some of the surf shops, I still don't have a rash gaurd, but i didn't get any rash the first session, maybe it ... read more
