The backwaters of India Asia » India » Kerala
Since I have been Kerala for one week and have visited a lot of places I am going to write about my experience of the whole place rather than do individual entries on each. My first port of call was Ernakulam (Cochin) which is a major port and the largest city in Kerala. Arriving at 6.00am made for an enjoyable change as at first light there was no one around to hassle us and we were able to walk freely taking in the city for 2 km to catch a ferry to Fort Cochin, the best part of the city to [View Full Entry]

Two weeks gone Asia » India » Kerala » Kozencherry
Well folks, I've been in India now two weeks and I have two weeks to go (actually it was two weeks yesterday, but close enough). I started woodcarving today, and it's great. I'm making a lotus flower. I find that I'm staying well after my class is over to get parts of it finnished. I'm really excited about being able to bring back some samples of my woodcarving. My ayurvedic massage yesterday was quite an experience. Modesty went out the window. The massage is given on a wooden table with no sheet or anything. On top of that, there don't seem [View Full Entry]

Short Update Asia » India » Kerala » Kozencherry
Well, there's not too much to report since my last update. I've decided to drop dance. It's making me feel exhausted all the time and it's so hot and the dance studio is outdoors. I think the biggest problem is that I'm having a hard time eating most of the non-carbohydrate foods, and so I just don't have the energy for dance in 90 degree weather for two hours a day. I've decided to take up woodcarving instead. Also, I discovered yesterday that my phone will never work in Kerala, and that I'd have to buy an Indian phone, which is [View Full Entry]

Periyar Asia » India » Kerala » Kozencherry
Well, it's been quite an eventful few days. First, I quit the Mohiniattam. It was just too painful. Now I'm doing a different type of dance that starts with a B that I can't spell. It involves a lot of foot stamping. Also, this weekend seven of the students (myself included) went on a weekend trip to Periyar, which is up in the Cardamom hills. It's about a four hour drive on a ridiculously narrow road up the side of a mountain with gigantic buses coming at you from the other direction. There's no guardrails and the fog was intense (actually [View Full Entry]

monsoon season in goa! Asia » India » Goa » Vagator
july 23 friday so the other day we were walking all around vagatore trying to find bicycles for rent and after we'd walked for hours and not found any bikes , this guy in a bright yellow rain slicker pulls up on his moped and asks us if we want to be extras in a bollywood film. of course we say yes and take his name and number. his name is slash. his number didn't work. but lo and behold, he showed up this morning and got us a taxi to the next town over where they're shooting a film. so [View Full Entry]

Been a bit quiet from me hasn't it? Thought I'd give you all a break, though u know that now this is going to be an essay... Well right now I'm feeling a lil bit sun-sore after a day chilling out on the beach and swimming in the Bay of Bengal... ho hum. We arrived in Mamallapuram on Sunday, took the bus from Pondicherry, and I think last time I wrote I was Madurai, so there is some catching up to do! On our last night in Madurai we were chilling out in the temple, as you do, when we were [View Full Entry]

normal nagpur Asia » India » Maharashtra » Nagpur
The time has finally come for us to move on from Nagpur -the most normal Indian city we have visited so far. By normal I don’t mean at all that the last few weeks here have been a disappointment - in fact quite the opposite. By just being somewhere off the tourist trail (Napgur gets just one page in our lonely planet guide) you learn about what normal, everyday, Mr and Mrs India and their family get up to. I now know that many Nagpurians have Christmas carols as their mobile phone rings. I know that Army lorries are used here [View Full Entry]

Arrival in Kerala Asia » India » Kerala » Kozencherry
So I have finally arrived in Kerala. When I got here last night I was a little disappointed. Neither the center nor the state were quite what I had expected and I was feeling quite homesick. However, now that I've started classes and seen a little bit of the surrounding area, my outlook is brightening. The center is four or five buildings scattered throughout a quite small village. About 2 km away is Kozencherry, the closest big town. After breakfast this morning (served on banana leaves and eaten with one's hands) I took the bus to Kozencherry (except I got off [View Full Entry]

Kanchipuram (Kanchi) is located about 50 km south west of Chennai and is famous for two reasons, temples and silk. There are over one thousand temples in and around Kanchi, we did not see them all (three was enough)! The second reason was the main driver for our visit. We heard of an charity organisation called the Rural Institute for Development Education (RIDE) whose aim is to take children out child labour in the silk industry and put them into education instead. RIDE give the opportunity to visit their headquarters, meet their leaders and be shown around the rural villages to [View Full Entry]

Many have heard of, and many praise Shimla for its British heritage. It was an old hill station when the British were in residence. To be honest, we weren't that impressed. If we'd visited it first then yes, we would have liked it. But after visiting the beauties of Leh and McLeod it didn't match up. It has an old British style Christian church, and oddities like a small 40's style 'Gaiety' theatre (which we would have loved to see used) but we had more issues of misunderstandings with language and dodgy food there than any where else. It has its [View Full Entry]
