ASHA. We had the privilege of visiting a slum project called Asha. The project started by offering free health care in a slum, and is now operating in over 40 slums in the Delhi Region. One lady we met had an alcoholic husband and was illiterate, she is now a confident woman, who helps to administer medication to the sick and also is a midwife. These women also tackled the authorities and now have a toilet block!! You don’t see many women out and about in India, except in the country when they are doing hard labour like cracking rocks with [View Full Entry]

My flight from Goa to Mumbai was without incident, but the cab ride from the airport to the Colabra section of Mumbai was a nightmare. The ride took over two hours with lots of traffice, the cabs are really small so I had to schootch down in the rear seat, and no air con with the hot air of Mumbai baking me. I had planned to have dinner with a friend but my late arrival cancelled that so I went to Leopolds (a Mumbai landmark among travelers) for dinner solo. Then to bed as I was in need of some serious [View Full Entry]

Second email: so...i think i wrote when i was in delhi, which feels like a really long time ago. delhi was great, except that jamie, the guy who i'm travelling with, got the well known 'delhi belly' and so our trip up to rishikesh up in the north was delayed! but that was ok, cause that meant an extra day in delhi, and we took a rickshaw (which are little motori(sz)ed vehicles that you find all over india) all over the city. we saw EVERYTHING - our driver was great at taking tourists around - we had no idea what we [View Full Entry]

UPDATE: Thanks to all who have expressed concern about our safety and the earthquake yesterday. Although Delhi did feel the quake, we were southeast of the city on our way to Agra when it happened. The quake was northwest of Delhi on the border of Pakistan and the death toll has topped 19,000. It is Sunday morning and the last 48 hours have been one of the most stimulating experiences in either of our lives. As Lou and myself are fans of diverse experiences, being in India is like a warped trip to Disney World for us. The culture, sites, sounds, [View Full Entry]

Departing from the Cottage tonight to go to Boca Raton, and from there to LA for a week, then the India with Carolyn Myss. You can check out Dr Myss's work at myss.com. You can check out my work at craniocean.com Last night, went to the Navy Ball in Palm Beach to honor the boys fighting in Iraq. My sister remarked that usually the Navy Ball is filled with young men, but last night there were only a few. The guys from Iraq...well...you could tell they'd been under fire and were glad to be back. Right or wrong, agree or disagree, [View Full Entry]

The Navy Ball Asia » India » Rajasthan » Jodhpur
Here's some shots from the Navy Ball at the Sailfish Club in Palm Beach. Hope they upload. Quite a way to begin a trip to India. We were all pretty toasted by the end of the evening...least I was...ouch! There were the sailors celebrating the birth of the Navy, great women, people of different ages, and Rick the bartender, possibly the wisest bartender I've ever met. He agrees with the poet Rumi that the soul has the shape of a bowl, that is, when looked at from above. [View Full Entry]

Departing West Palm for Boca Raton. My sister (from the Navy Ball) will give me a ride to the Jet Blue Terminal at Ft Lauderdale International Airport...5 am. This will begin days and days of Jet Lag! "Why India?" It was purely intuitive. I was checking links on the site, craniocean.com and saw myss.com on it. i checked out the myss link and saw the news about a trip to India in 5 star hotels. It seemed a nice way to go...but before I knew it, intuition said to go. The feeling of intuition (even if a voice) is very different [View Full Entry]

Okay, bought a digital camera. A Kodak Easy Share 4.0 at Wallmart, but it goes great with iphoto for the Macintosh. The trick is to not install the Kodak software but to just do it and plug it in. Now, to figure out how to upload photos and so on. Thanks for your patience as I figure this out. The washing machiine will have to wait. [View Full Entry]

My sleeper ticket only cost me 2.90. You get for what you pay for! 8 people crammed into a space that could barely hold 6, more vinyl than John Peel and a few dodgy bugs crawling around. It’s only 12 hours of my life, plus I am too drunk to stay awake and worry about things. After a pretty reasonable sleep, considering, I got to chat to my fellow carriage mates. A Russian and 2 Czech guys, all had typical eastern European haircuts (to match mine I guess) and liked their football, which is always a good icebreaker, almost as good [View Full Entry]

Autumn in Lonavala Asia » India » Maharashtra » Lonavala
It was the autumn break in our girls’ school, which brought us to Mumbai on Saturday, the 8th of October 2005. We left for Lonavala (a sleepy resort in the Western Ghats) that same day in a Toyota Innova. The ride was comfortable and the road great. Actually the road was unbelievable and I often found myself ranting about it! You could for a moment forget you were on the Mumbai - Pune highway and instead talk yourself into believing you were on a long drive through Ohio or Pennsylvania! The hilly terrain was similar except for the fact that highway [View Full Entry]
