Its about time Asia » India » Maharashtra » Mumbai
Visited so far on this trip before starting blog > Scotland (my home country) > Norway > Holland> USA > Venezuela Canada > Bolivia > Argentina > Brasil > South Africa > Algeria > Nigeria > Middle East > Singapore > Indonesia > India Not sure why I am doing this blog thing. Most of what I have done can not be printed, for fear of prosecution :-) I have been in some nasty places in my time but this one (Mumbai) is up there with the best of the worst. Nothing of much interest here but it gave me the [View Full Entry]

Dirt around Gold - Amritsar Asia » India » Punjab » Amritsar
After resting for so many days in McLeod Ganj, we decided it was time to move on and see some of India. We took the easy way and rented a jeep with a driver, to do the 200km 5 hours journey (yes... that's India) to Amritsar. Amritsar is the holiest city for the Sikh, the guys with the funny thing on their head (just kidding, they are nice people!) and the main site is the golden temple. We arrived in the evening and decided to go to Laurence road, which is the modern part of town - relatively speaking of course. [View Full Entry]

Octopussy strikes again Asia » India » Rajasthan » Udaipur
Have made it to Rajasthan and to the town of Udaipur. I'm sure you'd all recognise it from the lake with hotel in the middle. We've hired autorickshaws for the day to take us around between sites. There's an old city and the streets are very narrow so how we haven't hit any building, person or animal so far is a miracle. It's a bit like being in a remake of the Octopussy rickshaw chase - the film was made here. The countryside here is stunning, very hilly and lush due to the almost constant rain at present. We're staying just [View Full Entry]

Udaipur Asia » India » Rajasthan » Udaipur
The overnight bus was not so bad namely because I insisted on seat number 1 which meant there was no one in front of me to recline into me. There was a bit of a mix up during the bus switch in Jodhpur as someone else had seat #1 on their ticket but I was having none of that. I passed time showing the bus drivers' assistant my photos before I caught a few hours of sleep before we hit Udaipur at 5:30am. I tagged along with two Korean girls on the bus to a non Lonely Planet hotel named Minerva. [View Full Entry]

When last you heard from your intrepid travellers they were beating their way through hordes of touts and taxi drivers in Agra. After seeing the Taj Mahal and getting out of Agra unscathed we headed for the city of Jaipur. The third stop on India's golden triangle tourist trail. Again we were waylaid upon arrival by taxi drivers desperate for commissions but by now we were developing hides of thick leather in our dealings with them. We got off the train and drove around all afternoon looking for a suitable place to crash. There weren't many. Those rooms that were available [View Full Entry]

Hunt for the elusive black morph Jumping Ant started off where I had seen it last time, a good 4 years back, in the valley of Evergreen forests in a village called Sullali, some 2 hours away from Sagar, Shimoga. We measure distance there by the time taken to travel rather than actual meters itself. Reached Sagar early in the morning with a bad tummy (groan...) and had the best food one can with a bad tummy, idli, vada, sambhar..yumm.. It was heavenly to get back to paying 5 Rs for a plate, compared to exhorbant prices in Bangalore. With still [View Full Entry]

Little Tibet in India Asia » India » Himachal Pradesh » Mcleod Ganj
A bit of history or guide book stuff: About 55 years ago communist China took over Tibet, and ever since China is working to destroy the independent Tibetan culture. On the way they killed many Tibetans, and in 1959 the Tibetan leader, the Dalai Lamah, decided to go in exile and try to fight for freedom from outside Tibet. India gave the him and his group political asylum, and more than that, they let them fight for their freedom (in peaceful measures only) from their new home. McLeod Ganj is the center of that Tibetan community in exile. The Dalai Lamah [View Full Entry]

Yesterday we went to a movie. It was the best cinema in McLeod - the Movie Den. It looks more or less like a bus, just a bit more spacious, and even air conditioned, so no complaints about that. The quality wasn’t so great, but ok, you can manage. We watched “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, which is a really stupid movie… very good choice for this vacation here. But the highlights of the movie were the subtitles! Somebody made them by listening probably, or maybe they even have a speech recognition software? Who knows. The result was really funny! Is there some cosmic hole here, throwing you back to Israel once you step out of this bus that took you to McLeod Ganj? Wherever you go in McLeod you see Israelis, you hear Hebrew. The merchants in the shops and in the market will say some words in Hebrew as soon as they hear us talking Hebrew. Some restaurants offer menus in Hebrew. There are many adds in Hebrew in the streets, advertising courses or restaurants. And if in McLeod you feel that maybe 50% of the tourists are Israeli, it gets worse when you go to the villages of [View Full Entry]
