Eiiiyy. So much to talk about since my last update!!!!! I believe it's been about six weeks since the last post... which brings me to my 3 month mark here in India. From Delhi, I was originally supposed to head to Dharamshala, yet i was told it was unsafe due to a small conflict with the chinese government and the Dalai Llama (these conflicts tend to be ongoing). Dharamshala was still freezing at the time, so it's probably better that I headed to Rishikesh- yoga capital of the world. There is yoga everywhere, the small town is located on the upper part of the Ganges river. There are many criminals dressed in orange to disguise themselves as sadus, or holy men, but otherwise Rishikesh was incredibly safe. Oh, and, foreigners run the town. I've never seen ... read more

Darjeeling We got dropped off on Darjeeling's Hill Cart Road and wondered aimlessly for a while to find a taxi. Someone saved us in the end but charged us 150 to get to our hotel.  Accommodation We stayed at The Travellers Inn which is near the TV tower. We negotiated the room rate down from 1500 to 800 rupees per night including a heater (required!!) It was really nice and had a good little restaurant which has great views (on a clear day). The staff were also lovely and would do anything for you - we were especially demanding for pots of tea! However, the place was freezing - 24/7. It was difficult to eat in the restaurant as it was so cold and there were no heaters. The heater in our room was good ... read more

Darjeeling used to be the main British hill top retreat when the Raj was ruled from Calcutta. From here they could manage the empire during the stifling heat of the Indian summer. And my what a spot they picked! Situated in the north-east of the country, up high in the hills with magnificent views of the Himalayas, and rolling tea plantations covering the hillsides, it is one of my favourite spots in Asia. It is like a different country compared to the rest of India, more like Tibet or Nepal. Many Tibetan refugees fled here when China annexed Tibet, and Nepali workers used to tend to the plantations, so an interesting cultural diversity exists here. Darj is clean and spacious (no dust and it even had bins!), has some beautiful guest houses, and the people were ... read more

After arriving in SIliguri (delayed 2 hours by the train, as whats now becoming expected), we got a jeep up through the hills to Darjeeling. Unfortunately the 'Toy Train' wasn't operating at the moment, although I'm sceptical to whether it has been since it was rumored to have broken down early 2009. However the jeep ride would have to be placed as by far the best journey we have had so far. The views were absolutely amazing. The road winds around the hills passing though small villages with little victorian houses, built during the times of Colonisation by the British, now painted beautiful bright reds, blues and greens. Pray flags drape across the roads and there are many monastries along the way nestled into the hillside. I've never seen anything quite like it, there was a ... read more

It feels like ages since the last blog, probably because of the huge distance we’ve travelled and how we’ve settled in a town so different from anywhere we’ve been before. We’ve been staying in Darjeeling, located in the foothills of the Himalayas, right next to Nepal. The views are spectacular, especially when they’re not covered in cloud, the temperature is chilly (although sunny during the day) several tops, coats and blankets are worn in the evenings and, thanks to a friend, we’ve discovered Honey Bee Brandy which keeps you nice and toasty too. One of the reasons we chose to visit Darjeeling is because my Mum went to school here, an international boarding school called Mount Hermon. We spent our first day drinking tea and sorting out our Indian mobile. We also met up with my ... read more

Hellooooooooo, After an 8 hours train to Patna we left firmly hating the place disgusting first night hotel then a quest to find somewhere else but no hotels wanted us due to us being foreign so we walked around and faced a lot of 'no room at the inn'. I was sweaty and dusty and christof even more so but we found a nest in the end. Took a 16 hour overnight train to Silguri which is a small little town that provided a delicious egg curry feast and much needed shut eye after the minimal sleeping on the crowded, smelly train (we were by the toilet). From Silguri we took a cramped jeep up the steep, winding and hairpin/hair raising Tenzing Norgay road to Darjeeling. We climbed high with our ears popping (obviously Chris' more ... read more

Hej, This is my first English travel blog on my trip around the world. The last few days of my visit to India I will be spending in Darjeeling. It is a relaxed little town, kinda like Dharamsala. Al kinds of different ethnics live here. It almost feels like I'm in Nepal or China. But the people who live here the Gorkha's are a mix of Nepali, Bhutani, Myamari and Chinese people. The people are more relaxed they don't yell as much as in the rest of India. Like in Dharamsala the foreigners here are a mix of trekkers, tourists and alternatives who come to study Tibetan or some other local language. The nature around here is amazing. You get a real nice view on the Himalaya's and on the tea plantations. It's a real good ... read more

One more full day until Varanasi. I've been in Darjeeling over a week now, over two visits. It's hard to leave due to the holiday season celebrating Durga Puja, and now gearing up for Diwali. The good news is there are much worse places to be stranded in than Darjeeling. It's a beautiful and friendly place and I'd recommend a weeks stay there to anyone. Today, it was all about the tea when Marc and I had a walk to the Happy Valley Tea factory and plantation. We had a quick tour around the factory which showed us in about twenty minutes the tea processing stages from being picked, dried, separated, and packed. A tea leaf, for example, has three main parts, but only the middle stem is used for white tea and the other two ... read more

Darjeeling is really beautiful and relaxed. It's so different to Kolkata, which I kind of got used to, and even liked in it's hectic way by the end. The weather is actually really like London in early September. Sunny at times followed by rain. There is little of the heat, crush, humidity of Kolkata here. It's very hilly too. The streets are like Edinburgh or Durham with their steep climbs which leave you breathless half way up. I arrived at the Tower View hotel and asked for a room is the dormitory, it costs 70Rs per night which is about a pound. There was almost no light, random planks of wood in the corner, only one plug socket, and spiders everywhere. It was really bleak and the toilet was blocked (traditional Indian toilets are an ordeal ... read more

I'd been advised to set off early for Sealdah Railway Station as traffic was likely to gridlock in the evening, and the normally 20 minute journey could take two hours. My train was at 10:05 pm on the Darjeeling Mail, and to be on the safe side I flagged down a taxi at about 4 pm, talked to the friendly driver who at the end of the journey told me this wasn't really his cab and there isn't much money in taxi driving etc, and arrived at the railway station at about half past. Sealdah Station is massive from the outside and was all lit up for Durga Puja. It looked really strange and intimidating in the rapidly fading light. Matters weren't helped by the fact that when I was in the middle of paying the ... read more
