Background: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.

First things first...I have an Asian Studies degree. Besides experience gained visiting the doctor, being raised by a Nurse Practitioner, and watching my fair share of ER episodes, I have no formal medical training. I entered the Child Family Health International program as a Pre-Masters of Public Health student, but if there is anything I have learned, it is that not all things translate well. The first day of rotations, immediately after meeting the cardiologist, a patient in a very crowded office is herded into a seat for Marti and I to inspect. Marti is a PA student I am paired [View Full Entry]

I wasn't too full of beans when I got up at 10AM, but there was admin to be done which brooked no laziness. I drew a skeleton map of the area, showing just the bus station and the hotel, and asked the reception guy (who spoke good English) to fill in i) the railway station, ii) an Internet cafe, and iii) an optician. His initial response was to tell me where the tourist information office was, but that seemed an unnecessary detour so I pressed him again. Unfortunately that proved to be a mistake. He positioned the railway station on the [View Full Entry]

I'd had some very tasty mango juice as part of my lunch at the hotel yesterday, so I thought I'd try the orange juice today. However what arrived in the glass resembled the contents of a fluorescent marker, and certainly had not originated in an orange. I do need to boost my fruit intake. Today was another uneventful one, with a final wander around McLeod Ganj being the limit of my ambition, before catching the 6PM overnight bus to Dehra Dun. The hotel had done a good job of confusing the hell out of me regarding how to actually get the [View Full Entry]

Took the auto-rickshaw to the Forest Research Institute Museum, set in a 500 hectare park and is housed in a very grand Raj era building - according to Lonely planet its bigger than Buckingham Palace, stat’o. It was a fabulous building and the grounds were beautiful, lots of trees and monkeys. Museum was interesting but it had seen better days. Took a vickram (shared autorickshaw) back to the hotel. Dropped off at the clock tower. A young Indian man introduced himself as I was walking to the hotel and asked if he could spend the day with me. He said he [View Full Entry]

Took the bus to Dehra Doon, squeezed right in. Met an American couple who live in an Ashram. The man used to be a software engineer, he had a huge 'Unix nerd turned spiritual seeker beard', geezer. Dehra Doon is the capital of Uttaranchal, it’s noisy and polluted. Stayed at Motel Himshri, very nice. Brought a beautiful guitar, case and strings for £27.00, bargain. Played that all night. Had Aloo Gobi (potato curry) - very tasty, my Israeli friend recommend it. [View Full Entry]

In May this year I decided to visit Kedarnath and Badrinath. On the way, I had to stay for a day in Dehradun because a friend who had promised to give me ride up to Rudraprayag – the place from where one gets vehicles for Kedarnath -- had some work there. Since I had a full day to roam around I decided to visit Sahastradhara, a popular picnic spot some six kilometers away from the city. Dehradun is capital of the newly-created hill state Uttaranchal. The city is known for its education institutes especially Doon School and Indian Military Academy. It [View Full Entry]
