Background: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.

just a quick update Asia » India » Uttarakhand » Dehradun
Just to let you guys know I am perfectly fine. Mumbia is 700miles south of Delhi and I am over 100 miles north of Delhi. So we are no where close to where the attacks happened. I'm in class now and will call you as soon as I get a chance. No worries. [View Full Entry]

It's 6:45pm Thanksgiving night.... I'm starving, which is a good thing compared to yesterday when I couldn't keep anything in. Whew! So now I am ready to have some turkey and stuffing. We can't forget the mashed potatoes n' gravy, cranberries, and green bean casserole. Yum. It's not good to be talking about food when you're hungry, it's worse than grocery shopping while you're hungry. I have to admit that I was never that big of fan of Thanksgiving. Mainly because you eat yourself silly and watch football. Hmmm, not one of my favorite things. But to get into the whole [View Full Entry]

OH NO! Asia » India » Uttarakhand » Dehradun
GREAT! I'm out of money. That wouldn't be a problem except I lost my ATM card so now I'm broke. So what do you do when you're in a foreign country and penniless? Easy, take a deep breath and get a job at a local restaurant. Unfortunately, when you can't pay your expenses the hotel can keep your bags. That just stinks! The restaurant that I'm working at wont allow you to work in jeans, so I had to trade a local shop owner my jeans for some more appropriate work clothes. Here is a picture of my new attire. What [View Full Entry]

I figured that it was time to show you what I am actually doing over here in Dehradun, besides playing tourist. I'm getting my learning on!!!!!!! See here's the proof. :P So far I've learned about DNS and DHCP servers, OU's (organizational units are like filing cabinets or trash cans), GPO's (group policy objects tell you what you can or can't do), Active Directory, Domain Controller, and 9 million other things that sound just as mysteriously boring. I'm surprised at how much I have retained, but to be honest there's so much more to learn. I don't think it will ever [View Full Entry]

We left Bareilly after having what we thought was a pleasant meal at a resturant specifically for families and women! The food tasted pretty good so we were happy to indulge in a chicken dish. We had booked our train ticket the day before which would take us all the way to Derhadun. On booking the ticket we were informed that the coaches were all pretty much booked up and so we were left with little choice but to get a sleeper class coach ticket which would set us back aout Rs 600. This roughly translates into about 8 pounds. For [View Full Entry]

I passed my exam! Now I know that I say that I was nervous about whatever exam I was about to take but this one nearly kicked my butt. I was so tempted to walk in to the exam and tell the lady forget it I will take the exam on Monday. Well I changed my mind, and now I get to relax. Where is my umbrella drink? LOL 2 book, 2 exams, 2 weeks. That’s all I have left in my course. I’m relieved and yet…naw I’m relieved. Let’s face it, trying to cram so much information into your brain [View Full Entry]

How much? Asia » India » Uttarakhand » Dehradun
When I first arrived in Delhi I had no concept of how much things cost compared to back home. I wasn't sure if R100 was the normal rate for a rickshaw or if I was being taken advantage of. I learned that it all depends on what you are willing to pay and where you want to go. LOL Honestly I am only half kidding on that. But you talk to other people and you quickly learn what the going rate for things actually is. Just to give you an idea of the actual cost of things I made a little [View Full Entry]

On a clear day... Asia » India » Uttarakhand » Dehradun
The past two days it's been clear enough to see Mussori from where I'm at. Which is actually nice since lately the clouds role in at the base of the mountains and obscure the view in the afternoon. I can't help thinking that it looks a little like the foothills back home in Southern California maybe a few decades ago, when the mountain communities were still fairly small. Wow, now I'm really dating myself. Either way it's nice to look up and see the mountains. I'm looking forward to this Sunday when we will have time to go up there and [View Full Entry]

moving up? Asia » India » Uttarakhand » Dehradun
I guess you can say that I am moving up when it comes to my accomidations. My room is much larger and my window actually has a view of some of the shops. The coolest part is my view also includes a tree. Ok so for most of you it must sound pretty hilarious that I am excited about a tree, but when you have spent nearly 4 weeks in a hotel that's window looks into your neighbor's room you would be pretty happy too. And no my neighbor was not all that pleasing to the eyes. Mom, I would say [View Full Entry]
