India is a whirlwind of a travel destination; Varanasi could well be the eye of the storm. The city is thought to be one of the oldest continually inhabited communities in the world, a title not lost on the locals. An elderly man asked us rhetorically “How old is your oldest city? So you are experiencing India...
my first experience was at the age of eight. I was in Bombay and witnessed vultures picking at bodies at a Jain temple on Malabar Hill. I never wanted to visit India again; and have only passed through the New Delhi airport since then; which itself was crowded with people who did not need to be there. I just do not need to witness this.

Hi Bob
That's quite an experience you had at such a young age. I can understand your reluctance to return. India is continually shocking and a challenge at times.

Don't be scared...
... you'll love it, I'm sure, so long as you know what you're in for. I've had to learn to manage my expectations a lot!

Being stared at on the train
I found the best way to stop this when on the train in South Korea Amy .Was to first put on my magic thumb (the plastic one with the magnet in ) then start to spin two coins from my thumb ,then to take a drink from my camelback whilst going cross eyed .Then craning my neck forward with a wide eyed look at them .This worked well and sometimes caused them to move seats ,but I am much uglier than you . Love Dad xxx
