France give it a rest, the days of the empire are over and to be honest yours was always a little small – Pondicherry
Published: March 11th 2012Asia » India » Tamil Nadu » PondicherryIndia must have more adverts per square mile than any other country in the world, certainly more than any country I have visited anyway. Indian towns are filled to the brim (and often well over the brim) with a sensory overloading array of billboards, posters and signs, you will often even find advertising painted on the side of peoples homes. Every centimetre of space seems to have been claimed by advertising, nothing but nothing is sacred. One of the things that has most surprised me is the amount of advertising that is dedicated to cement. Cement is perhaps the most heavily marketed product in India, I would even hazard a guess that there are more adverts for cement than there are for mobile phones, Bollywood films and soft drinks combined. There are countless cement brands and ... read more
So, firstly I need to make an apology to the people of India. As soon as i stepped out of the internet place in Varanasi we saw women sat next to a body crying their eyes out. It appears that to cry at the ghat is bad Karma and this is why the women are not present at the burning. Since leaving Varanasi we got a 28 hour train to Hyderabad. The journey wasnt too bad, we were the only white people there again but it left and arrived pretty much on time so we couldnt complain! The next day we walked around the park and visited the free health museum as we couldnt really be bothered with too much sightseeing that day. Im glad we didnt have to pay to get in as looking at ... read more
adventures in Tamil Nadu and a digression on Egypt
Published: January 30th 2011Asia » India » Tamil Nadu » PondicherryUpon leaving the orphanage I was immediately thrown back into the chaos. I made my train by the skin of my teeth, another thirty seconds and I would have missed it. It was a cliched movie like moment where I had to run with all my baggage and jump on the last car as it pulled away. Unfortunately my car was at the opposite end, so that at the next stop i had to jump off and run the two hundred meters as fast as I could to where my car was located. Sweaty, exhausted, overwhelmed, I began my marathon 18 hour train ride to Chennai. The sleeper car was filled to capacity, but I lucked out in that the people I sat next to were very friendly and spoke English. Throughout the day there was ... read more
Happy New year. We are now in French colonial Pondicherry where the boulevards are quiet and baguettes and croissants plentiful. We had a nice new year on the beach, ate some massive fresh prawns, drank some very strong cocktails in a bar then at midnight went down on the sand along with seemingly everyone from Mamallapuram to watch the fireworks and wish everyone you met a Happy New Year. We've had it easy since then, taking the speedy two hour bus down to Pondicherry, we're staying in the old French part of the town in a French run guest house where we've wangled the top floor room with a thin tin roof and private terrace where we can hide from the sun and watch the rainstorms come rolling in. The town itself is like a nugget ... read more

Torej! I still got it! "Prides poslusat?" me je ... read more
French people aren’t nearly as endearing outside of France. I’ve often found them to be overly self-assured, intelligent, and serious (to overgeneralize), and inside their native country they are tolerable because of what they cultivate: fantastic food, architecture, language, lunchtimes, etc. Here in Pondicherry (now Puducherry - but let’s be honest, not the same ring to it) we are suffocating in them at every restaurant, bar and beach due to their reign for a hundred years. Several hundred years. 62 years. Does it matter? I told you, I’m on vacation, dammit. I’m being an ass, but like most unpleasantries said, it stems from jealousy. Two Parisians who had just met sat behind me at a café and chose to speak in English the whole time. Show-offs! I listened to them struggle at times to properly communicate ... read more
I didn't know that getting a train ticket would be so difficult!! My original plans were laid out to go to Hampi, but for this weekend and coming weekend there would be no available tickets, except for at least 20 people in the Wait List! One suggestion I got from work colleagues was to visit Pondicherry, a beach town in Tamil Nadu State. It's famous spot for those interested in yoga and meditation, and couple Ashram are of International referrence. Well, it seemed interesting to see the beach and combine it with a train trip. Well, a 10hours train trip!!! It left Bangalore at 11:45pm and by 9:50am I was at Pondicherry. It was a bit tricky to find the right booth to buy the ticket (I stood in 3 different lines, only to find that ... read more
we're in a quaint and charming little indian union territory of puducherry (more affectionately known as pondicherry/pondi; hellooo alcohol!); with a salient and conspicuous french colonial heritage that looms large. ergo, lanes/streets are Rues and fish is poisson and they do a mighty fine coq au vin (haha yes we're not that cheap charlies afterall; we do indulge in spurts). its a seaside town so thats a pretty big plus as we soak up the bay of bengal. azure waters it patently isnt haha! water does glisten sporadically. one thing's for sure, all that glitters isnt gold, as b finds herself plagued with the mandatory stomach bug & diarrhea. its the quintessential rite of passage that everyone goes thru' to then be fully inducted into India proper haha. so she's fine & well, surmounted that litmus ... read more
Pondicherry offre certain attrait touristique que ... read more
