It's been an awfully long time since we've blogged but we've got the reasonable excuses of internet being harder to come buy and being struck down by horrible, horrible illness that is now (touch wood) way behind us.
Since we were last with you we have traveled between Kolkata and our current location of Mamallapuram. The journey has taken us through the southern part of West Bengal, the entire coast of Orissa then south into Andhra Pradesh where we cut inland for Christmas in Hyderabad.
The coastline has been hugely variable from quiet little fishing villages with sludge covered beaches to cities with purpose built promenades where locals and Indian tourists stroll and eat candy floss, samosas and stuffed chilies. We have traveled by train, rickety slow local bus, terrifying fast express bus, ferry (big canoe), tuk-tuk, cycle rickshaw and taxi to cover the 1500 miles and, despite the 10 days spend lying very still and sweaty under our mosquito net, are enjoying ourselves.
We decided to spend Christmas in Hyderabad and found a hotel with cable TV, thick mattresses and a piping hot shower, it was here we really made our final recovery and got on with the real business
of buying Christmas presents, watching Christmas films and eating pizzas, burgers and the glorious McChicken sandwich.
Christmas day itself is a bit of a non event in the city, everything is open as normal, so we found a Church and belted out some carols. We then went to a posh restaurant and over ordered considerably especially as we had eaten very, very little in the previous two weeks. We did manage to stomach two Budweisers each though which were chilled and delicious.
Once we left Hyderabad we made the decision to monster it all the way south to Mamallapuram as we couldn't face another massive city that Chennai promise to be, this had the downside of being a 16 hour bus ride followed by a 3 hour connecting bus which was about as much fun as a 20+ hour door to door journey can be.
So I'm glad to say we are both well and wish everyone at home a merry Christmas and happy new year.
