Background: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.

The bustle of Ajmer Asia » India » Rajasthan » Ajmer
We had all intention of doing the budget thing and catching a bus from Bundi to Pushkar until a Spanish couple asked us to share a taxi with them. Happily we agreed and with luggage loaded on top we set off. The road was very rough for the first couple of hours and it certainly would have been a bouncy trip in the local bus. The countryside was semi arid with patches of cultivation which seemed to be mainly corn. We could see the bright saris of the women dotted throughout the fields. We also passed many groups of sheep and [View Full Entry]

Elephant Project Asia » India » Rajasthan » Jaipur
We have been doing the elephant project in Jaipur. Last week we had to get them ready for their days work at Amber Fort. They take ppl up to the fort which is on the top of a hill. This means we had to get up at 4.30am in order to get a rickshaw for 5.15!!!! The 5 elephants live in an enclosure quite close to the fort. They sleep under a shelter and then there are huts the other side where the elephant drivers and their family sleeps. When they are home they are chained up by 3 feet. Its [View Full Entry]

Bundi - a peaceful haven Asia » India » Rajasthan » Bundi
When we realised that Bundi was going to celebrate a festival we made sure that we arrived in town a couple of days before. The people are celebrating Teej - we were not sure what would happen but we read that it would be colourful! Bundi is a small town overlooked by a deserted fort and palace and though on the tourist trail supposedly not spoiled by the industry. We loved the town at first sight though we were tired when we arrived. We had booked a hotel room from Udaipur but upon arrival changed and went to another hotel [View Full Entry]

Another taxi hire took us to the amazing fort complex - all 700 acres of it - at Chittorgarh, two and a half hours from Udaipur. There are a few people living within the fort walls but the main city sits below the plateau upon which the fort is perched. It was built in the 8th century and has had a very sad history. Three times when the fort was under attack it's soldiers chose death before dishonor. Despite it's enormous size, as it is not built atop a mountain as most forts in Rajasthan are, it was obviously vulnerable [View Full Entry]
