Background: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.

Our arrival into Jaisalmer was not as expected. We had planned to walk to the fort and find the accommodation we had earmarked for that night, inside the walls of the fort itself. However, 2 stops before our disembarkation on the outskirts of town a couple of ''locals' got on and started inviting us to take their company car to our accommodation for 20rs. We initially refused, used to scams like this, but on the 4th enquiry and reassurance they would take us straight there we agreed (a decision coloured by the approach of the fort which was quite a climb [View Full Entry]

Jodhpur- The Blue City Asia » India » Rajasthan » Jodhpur
Setting off early, we booked passage from Udaipur to Jodhpur on a private bus due to lack of any direct trains. Amazingly, trains in Rajastan are few and far between and tend to leave at silly times- either late at night or very early in the morning, arriving at equally unsociable times. Maybe that is a bit harsh but is certainly the case for the routes we want to travel, which is of course, the most important thing :-) For a private bus, it was quite uncomfortable, overcrowded and the poor roads provided a 6 hour bone shaking experience. Our [View Full Entry]

We sat around Margao station in the late afternoon waiting for our train to Mumbai at 6:20. The main express train an hour earlier that we wanted to get was fully booked and it seemed like this later train was one that put on during high demand to cope. We found our carriage which was filthy and smelled of wee, it looked like it may have been left in a rail yard for a while with the windows open as it was in poor shape. Nevermind - not much we could do at this point. The sleeper carriages are split up [View Full Entry]

Gelukkig hadden we o [View Full Entry]

Nahargarh Fort is located on the rugged ridge of Aravali Hills and it forms an impressive northern backdrop of Jaipur. It looks most classy when floodlit at night. The fort overlooks the city and presents a glittering view of the city lights. It was built in 1734 and extended in 1868. Nahargarh meaning abode of the tigers was built by Jai Singh to bolster the defence of Amber. The legend has it that it was named Nahargarh after Nahar Singh, a prince whose spirit would destroy the construction and stall its progress. So after a tantrik invoked the spirit, it agreed [View Full Entry]

Elephant Festival Asia » India » Rajasthan » Jaipur
The Elephant Festival is a unique event held annually in Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan. Groomed to perfection, glittering in gold, row upon row of elephants catwalk before an enthralled audience. The elephants move gracefully in procession, run races, play the regal game of polo, and finally participate in the spring festival of Holi. It is festival time for the elephants. The Jataka stories of Buddhism refer to the tradition of Hastimangala (the Elephant Festival). A royal mount from time immemorial, the elephant has also been a symbol of strength and wealth. For the Rajput kings, the e [View Full Entry]

Vandaag, zaterdag 5 september, is Teacher’s Day in India.
