Background: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.

Another tour, another overnight train ride, this time to Jaisalmer in Rajathstan. If you are going to take a seventeen hour train ride in India in 3rd class, I highly recommend that you do it on Diwali. It is like travelling on Christmas Day; pretty much everybody is already at home and so the roads and trains are empty except for a few tourists (ans some Indian guy who started rubbing Mark's feet in the night, thinking it was one of the girls). The other thing that I would suggest is leaving at around 5pm, which gives you an hour of [View Full Entry]

India and road rage Asia » India » Rajasthan
27/09/09 Woke after not enough sleep again and headed off to Narita at 830 am and only just had enough time to get to the airport and make my flight at 1230pm. The flight was all the better for the fact that it was on a boeing and it was not nearly full with me having four seats to myself which allowed me to catch some decent sleep on the 8 hr flight to Delhi. On arrival I was met with temperatures of 34 degrees C and quite a high humidity. The pickup had my name spelt wrong so I missed [View Full Entry]

Rajasthan- I got scammed! Asia » India » Rajasthan » Jodhpur
I am at the northwest region of India right now, Rajasthan! It’s like a desert kingdom out here where there’s lots of grand palaces. The train ride between Jaipur and Jodhpur provided a great view of the landscape. Jodhpur is referred to as the blue city because a lot of the buildings are painted in blue. The Brahmins, one of the highest caste, painted their buildings blue because the color is considered holy. A lot of the gods like Shiva, Rama and Krishna are all blue. The fool got scammed! It was only a matter of time before I got [View Full Entry]

The final leg of our journey together took us to the desert town of Jaisalmer, in far northwest Rajasthan, not far from the border with Pakistan (something we were very aware of in the current political climate). It didn't get off to a great start... we were hassled by aggressive touts at the train station in searing heat, then Mozza and I came down with stomach cramps and other common traveller illnesses which saw me confined to my bed all afternoon and Mozza taking it easy. The next day, however, we were back to fighting strength and decided to tackle Jaisalmer [View Full Entry]

Tom Cruise my arse! Asia » India » Rajasthan » Jodhpur
Jodhpur was my first taste of luxury since arriving in India. We booked into a hotel within a colonial-style villa on the edge of town, and spent our first morning in the Blue City reclining on comfy chairs outside our air-conditioned rooms. Lovely. Our relaxed mood vanished pretty quickly though after getting a rickshaw to Jodhpurs main bazaar, which spreads out from the old clock tower. With sweat running in rivers down our backs, we decided to up the core temp by sampling some street food, a spicy little number which we ate standing right next to the pan of hot [View Full Entry]

Weekend trip to Jaipur! Asia » India » Rajasthan » Jaipur
Last weekend we decided to get out of Gurgaon and Dehli, so we arranged for our driver to drive us to Jaopur, a city in the state of Rajasthan. To be able to get a train ticket in this well organized country you have to book several weeks in advance through a not so logical booking system (it may be that we are a bit stupid, however, to us the system is a little bit difficult..). We therefore decided to give our driver Ravi some extra work hours and asked if he could drive us to Jaipur. Indian highways....are probably not [View Full Entry]

Highway to Jaipur...
Still no driver..
"Restaurant"by the highway.

My arrival by train to Udaipur was like being transported into a different country. Saying goodbye to the 3 army officers I shared a cabin with (and their machine guns, which I hadn seen the night before!), I stepped onto the platform and saw more westerners than in the entire period since arriving into Mumbai, a trend which continued at my hotel which was within spitting distance of Lake Pichola and the City Palace. My only task for the day was to wait for Mozza and Em, who were flying in from Mumbai. They arrived in the afternoon and so we [View Full Entry]

Hey Guys, Well after a nice night train ride we arrived in the city of Jodhpur, the train was pretty good despite my ranting about the state of the Delhi Train Station. Once we arrived we got settled into our Hostel and set out to explore. Our first stop was to vist the Mehrangarh Fort, which was built atop of a sandstone mountain and acts as a beautiful backdrop for the old city. The climb to the Fort was a little much in the heat but once we entered the Fort it was worth it. The Fort is amazing, the sheer [View Full Entry]
