Background: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.

At the temple - on top of the World
Colours for every occasion
Snakes in a basket

In Agra, I decided to continue to a nice quaint area known as Rajistan and start in the city of Jaipur. I found out it is the beginning of the typical tourist route of Rajistan, which includes Jaipur, Pushkar, Udaipur and Jodhpur. I hit 3 of the four places....damn, I am a tourist! As I said, I started out in Jaipur which was and interesting ride from Agra. I got on the bus and we barreled down the 'highway' dodging everything I mentioned before.....animals, cars, bikes, most of which didn't have any lights.....I am so shocked we didn't hit anything looking [View Full Entry]

When we arrived in Pushkar ten days ago we were disappointed to find that the world-famous holy lake, which has been the centrepiece of the Pushkar Festival for decades, maybe centuries, maybe millenia, was suddenly not there. This was particularly annoying because the lake is lovingly described in the latest Lonely Planet Guide and furthermore we had paid premium rate for a hotel with a lake view. In place of the lake was a flat expanse of brown dust, about 1 km square, inhabited by a few bulldozers, stray dogs, stray cows, and the occasional woman taking a shortcut with a [View Full Entry]

Jaipur and the Elephant Ride Asia » India » Rajasthan » Jaipur
Hi Everyone, I spent the last week in Jaipur and Udaipur in Rajasthan, India. Jaipur is home to the Amber fort and the Pink City. The Pink City gets its name from its pink city walls, but don't let the locals hear you call it that or they will laugh at you. Apparently to them it is the 'Old City.' While I was in Jaipur a met a group of girls who showed me around their college and took me to their English Institute where they take extra English classes. I got to meet the students and help them with their [View Full Entry]

Me and a Amber Fort

Hi all, If there is one bit of travel advice i can give to you all its this... don't eat anywhere the rough guide recommends! Myself and Jud did this in Agra at our own peril! It ended with us spending 24 hours with food poisoning, which didnt help considering we had to endure a bus journey. We have spent the last few days in Bharatpur which has a famous national park; we have spent today wandering around the park which is supposed to be a wetland (although not very wet because of the ten year drought Rajastan has been having, [View Full Entry]

Day 13 -Bharatpur Asia » India » Rajasthan » Bharatpur
Day 13 - Bharatpur - Jaipur An early morning start saw us catch cycle rickshaws to the Bharatpur Bird Sancturary which actually was a little further from the hotel than we thought. The rickshaw riders looked like they were struggling a little but we guessed they must be used to it, although a Chris Hoy in the making they are not. The bird park was good and we spotted loads of different types of birds including Serpent Eagles, Owls, Cattle eagrets, Kingfishers, wagtails, drongos and much more. We were also told about a part of the monestary where a monk lived [View Full Entry]

Day 14 Jaipur Asia » India » Rajasthan » Jaipur
Day14 - Jaipur After our late start, we were heading into the market area of Jaipur by tuk-tuk. We got out and headed towards the Palace of the Winds. We passed marketstalls and small shops, all of which promised much and we vowed to return later for shopping. The Palace of the Winds is pink, and has nearly 100 windows in it. We also saw where the City Palace gates were, and after consulting the guidebook thought this might be a good place to visit after the Amber Fort. After a few photos, we headed back to where the tuk-tuk's had [View Full Entry]

Procession in Pushkar Asia » India » Rajasthan » Pushkar
I had expected to see lots of street processions in Pushkar during the festival, but it was a while before I saw the first one. I was alone in the hotel room because Tracey had gone off early in the morning to photograph camels, old men in big turbans, scowling beggars, and suchlike. My laziness was rewarded by the appearance of this procession right outside the hotel, which overlooks the main bazaar street. First, before anything was visible, came the noise. A frightful ear-splitting but vaguely musical din, even louder than the normal bazaar din, which steadily and unbelievably increased i [View Full Entry]

Leaving Jaisalmer for Jodhpur, the Golden City for the Blue City, I got to try out yet another type of bus in India. This one was built more like a Greyhound bus you would see in the West, with one twist. Where buses typically have a lot of headroom, and a rack for bags, in this bus this space has been replaced with a number of bunk beds. For a few rupees more than a seat, you can lie down above everyone else's head and take a nap. I would be in there like a slinky, but an average sized woman [View Full Entry]

This blog, without a doubt, will be the shortest entry to date, most because I only spent about 45 minutes in Ranakpur. Edwina had not been feeling well for a couple of days and just couldn't face the idea of a seven hour bus ride from Jodhpur to Udiapur and wanted to get a taxi. Rebecca, Allie and I were each happy to chip in the 700 rupees each to join her and gain a smoother, quicker ride and an hour extra sleep in. The road from Jodhpur is quite a good one and almost immediately the countryside began to show [View Full Entry]
