Jaisalmer Another 4 Hr drive to our next stop, Jaisalmer in the Thar Desert. Once a flourishing trade centre on the busy caravan trade route to Afghanistan and Central Asia, the early traders grew very rich and competed with each other to beautify their austere desert surroundings with splendid palaces and havelis (houses) Made in the local golden sandstone. The fort is unlike any other that we have seen so far and it is very like a sand castle ! There are plenty of roof top bars and cafes to sit and watch..... It's Holi festival time and people are getting ready by buying the colourful powders to smear people with or just throw it about....our driver said that we'd miss this as we'd be in the car driving to our next destination, a Desert Camp ... read more

Blogs of Rajasthan are plenty in the net, covering almost all well known places. I will add one more with a different perspective. I searched elaborately thru internet for appropriate inputs, to finalize the logistics of a weeklong tour program covering important historical places, wildlife of Ranthambore and of course the desert of Jaisalmer. But I did not get it in a nutshell and had to pick and choose from various sources. In this blog I attempted to summarize our overall experience, program, means of transport, accommodation arrangements etc. sharing our feelings, advantages and pitfalls as felt by us, to facilitate planning of an overall tour schedule by future travelers of Rajasthan. I also narrated detailed description of my location wise experience in detail, thru separate blogs. OUR PROGRAM Rajasthan is one of the most popular ... read more

Udaipur to Jodhpur We had about a 2 hour drive through interesting countryside this morning, through small villages, and busy people about their daily lives. Lots going on with animals and harvesting. Also plenty of marble cutting factories and lorries piled high with all shapes and sizes of marble.A bit further was the sand stone cutting factories and mines, this is were all the Indian patio slabs come from. Stone is used for everything, even fence posts around animals. Wood is very scarce. Set in the lush green valley of the Aravalli mountain is the Ranakpur Jain Temple, which is one of the biggest and most important Jain Temple complexes with 28 halls, 80 domes supported by the 1444 marble columns, no two alike. The carvings were beautiful. Unfortunately I didn’t pay for a camera permit ... read more

The Grand Floral Affair We had to be at the show by 7.45, typically the Uber that we booked that was just 3mins away from picking us up, cancelled, so we had to book another one that was 6 minutes away... luckily we’d given ourselves a bit of wiggle room and got there in time. We found our space and pleased to see that we were in a corner, so more moving around space and not so much bumping into other competitors. There was a big brown box some sticks and a bucket of flowers.....we weren’t very impressed with the flowers...a bunch of gyp, yellow chrysanthemum, some dead looking grasses, 2 strelizia, and some reeds. The box held a metal stand, lots of different strings, jute, wire, different types of spheres and glass tubes . Quite a ... read more

Jaipur So having walked about a mile along the platform, we eventually found our carriage and settled in for the 5hr.journey to Jaipur. The Pink City. The train took off exactly on time but some how we ended up being 45 minutes late arriving at Jaipur. The first hour was mostly traveling alongside various rubbish dumps and shantytowns which was really very surreal and unbelievable that people lived in those conditions. We shared our compartment with an other couple, who where doing an organised tour....their luggage was following the train with their driver, who then met them on the station platform!!...why?!! Anyway we are now in Jaipur for a full week and even though there’s still lots of traffic and horns blowing, it feels very different to Delhi. Met up with Kevin and Elaine at the ... read more

Firstly I need to apologise for the sudden absence of blogs. On the last night that we were in Jodhpur I developed a problem with my eye and wasn't able to use my smartphone for more than a few minutes at a time. Hence no blogs for a while. Update: We're back in England thankfully, we managed to escape the shutdowns and flight cancelations everywhere, due to the corona virus, by the skin of our teeth. I have now been seen by an eye consultant at our local hospital and been given the all clear to use my smartphone. All be it in small doses and am in a ' wait and see how it goes' situation So, to back-track a few weeks. February 17th We were dropped off at the station in Jodhpur at the ... read more

Time to move on from Agra and explore Rajasthan, known as the Golden Triangle. We boarded the train at 2.30 in the afternoon and just like before it left bang on time at 2.50pm. Could teach British Rail a thing or two! Out seat numbers were 34 and 35 so we thought they'd be together but the weren't. A group of Americans got on and their seats were all over the place but in the same area too as was another English couple's seats. Between us we rearranged things so we were sat with our respective partners. When the ticket man came along to check tickets he was totally confused and finally gave up and let us stay where we were sat. Each time we stopped at a station and more passengers got on we pretended ... read more

Hariom was waiting outside for us at 8.30am this morning for another big day of sightseeing, our last in Jaipur. First stop was the City Palace. Hawa Mahal, or Palace of the Winds, which we saw the first afternoon we were here, is a wing of this palace. Still the residence of the Jaipur royal family, some wings, courtyards and gardens are open to the public. We purchased the Royal Grandeur tickets which entitled us to enter some of the reception and sitting rooms still used by the royal family. A guide is mandatory with this ticket, and security guards were everywhere, even taking the lifts with us. City Palace is a palace complex, which used to be the seat of the Maharajah of Jaipur and is made up of an impressive array of courtyards, gardens ... read more

For the next twelve days, we have the luxury of our own private driver and car, something we’ve been looking forward too. No more haggling with taxi and rickshaw drivers or airport runs for nearly two weeks...... Bliss! Hariom was waiting outside the hotel at 8.30am as arranged. His car, an SUV as I requested, was immaculate, with white covers on our two buckets seats, free water/wipes and onboard wifi. After introductions, we planned the days activities with him and headed away. Our first stop was in the town of Amer, 11klm from Jaipur, to see Panna Meena ka Kund, one of the stepwells responsible for sparking my interest in these structures. The water at the bottom of the stepwell was bright green, obviously full of algae. All it took was a Pinterest photo and I ... read more
