Background: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.

Got up at 05:00 for our deluxe bus to Jodphur.....NOT!!! We were the only westerners which was cool, however we stopped for everyone on the highway. We even made stops that were not on the way so that selling and buying could go on!! Loads of people sat on the roof and in the aisle- absoloutley boiling. Took over 5 hours. Rickshaw blokes at the bus station were an absoloute nuisance. We decided to stay at the hotel which we stayed at last time (rickshaw bloke had no idea were he was going ) and there was a march for BJP [View Full Entry]

always difficult to take pictures on the streets of rhajastan as noone stops for even a second, so you have to pick your vantage point carefully in order to not be knocked over!!
Went to jaipur last year for a few days, so saw most of the sights then... Booked our first deluxe bus tickets to Ajmer for tommorow. Spent the day in Jaipur avoiding children who were trying to pick pocket us and rickshaw wallahs who were tryng to send us the wrong way! We went to he city palace museum - which was quite expensive for india Rs 200 each; but we spent 2 hours there. We attempted to go in the Junega art gallery and modern art gallery *the modern art gallery looked closed - no westerner in sight and everyone [View Full Entry]

Decided to leave Bharatpur, as not a great deal to do and no where to go apart from a couple of e-mail places and fed up of being the only ones there!(had definetley gone at the wrong time) We both had iffy tummies (this will be a theme for our 5 months in india!!). Had minimal breakfast- plain toast and honey toast! Set off to catch the bus- rickshaw wallahs flagged one down for us thankfully; we got the "superior bus" (Mmmm!!) The bus was Rs 90 and took 4 squashed hours. We got a rickshaw to "pearl palace"- "top hotel"; [View Full Entry]

We got a room (bathroom and aircon) at the falcon guest house for Rs 200- we were the only ones staying there (infact I think we were the only people staying in bharatpur as we were out of season for the birds!) We arrived at the guest house in the middle of "prayer day"- oops! We had lunch and wandered for a while... nothing to see apart from the national park , which we plan to go to tommorow. Decided to go on the [View Full Entry]
