Octopussy's PalaceThis lake palace is now a (very expensive) hotel. I'll have to come back one day. I think this is where Roger sees all the totty by the pool... (bah!)
I had to create another section for this - I'm meant to be leaving Udaipur tomorrow morning for a place called Mt Abu (although just heard the bus has "broken"!)
No matter how hard I try I can't absorb the history of this city in terms of Maharajahs' dynasties. I'm sorry to disappoint anyone who hoped for a more cultural style of reportage - but all I can think is 'This is where Roger slid down the bannister' or where Q landed in his hot air balloon - heh heh:
"There's no time for that now! Later Perhaps..." This place is mesmerising especially in the evening, now that Diwali is only two days away it is lit up by fireworks all night. Alarmingly the children revel in setting off firecrackers that explode like a bomb going off - although it's quite amusing sitting in a restaurant and watching everyone jump (myself included!)
Octopussy's other palaceThere is another island behind the lake palace - with a garden palace. This is the one you see Octopussy's boat rowing to... nice view to the City Palace
The Garden PalaceSlightly disappiointing once you get here - it's really a big courtyard. In real historical terms of course it's beautiful and apparently inspired the Maharajah who built the Taj Mahal!
The Garden Palace - detailDetail of the front of the Garden Palace, again I think this appears in the movie. Shame the boat I went on didn't have a team of gymnastic totties rowing it...
Kahmal Khan's Fort! This is where a zoom lens would come in handy - you can see the fort on a mountain in the background, in real life called The Monsoon Palace
The Monsoon PalaceI couldn't get a shot from the other side as it's seen in the movie - great views over Udaipur although the jungle you see in the film has been shot somewhere else!
Where the girl spins off the balconyThis seems to be the only place up at the monsoon palace where they could have shot that scene - somehow it doesn't seem quite right as it's quite run down!?
A bit worrying!OK this wasn't in the film - but when you're in a rickshaw there's something disconcerting about passing this on the road, especially as it's not safe to be here after dark because of panthers and (po
... [more]
FireworksOk it's not the best picture - i couldn't help wobbling the camera - but gives an idea of the evening view across the two lake palaces
