Late start followed by breakfast outside overlooking the city and downtown to Old Udaipur
First to the Vintage Vehicle Museum which houses the King’s vintage car collection from Rolls Royces through Cadillacs to a Morris Minor. The green open topped Cadillac (see photo) was used by our Queen in the fifties during her State Visit to India.
We strolled through the markets in the old part of the City. Dodging and diving the bikes and carts we started at fruit and vegetables, through the spices and teas, jewelry, textiles, shoes and miniature paintings. Everything beautifully laid out, busy and vibrant – colours and aromas, smiles and greetings. All the children call out ‘Hi’ or ‘Hello’ with a big grin. We have only been met with kindness and courtesy.
You'll see a photo of a standard issue water pump. Every small village we have driven through seems to have one of these pumps - it appears everyone has access to clean water. We could say easy access - however, it may have to be carried some distance.
We were very interested in the general price charged for the vegetables per kilo – tomatoes and
cucumber at 20p, cauliflower and spring onions at 33p, peppers at 40p, green peas and red carrots at 25p, green chilli at 50p. Most people here will, if they are not vegetarian, only eat meat once a week at most – otherwise, for breakfast, lunch and dinner it’s rice, vegetables, lentils, chickpeas, and bread (Naan, chapatti, roti, paratha)
Very very early start tomorrow as we travel to our next destination and we will have to say goodbye to our two drivers who have been with us since Day 1 Delhi - Sohan and Yogi.
