We stopped in Jojawar for the night because the drive from Jaipur to Udaipur would have been too long a journey. In fact the journey from Jaipur to Jojawar was more than long enough. – over six hours to cover 300 kilometers.

A lot of the journey was on the expressway and the remainder weaving in and out of traffic on dusty roads through villages all alongside the new expressway which is in the process of being constructed. The general countryside was scrub, very arid and dry, dusty and not much agriculture.

We drove through the main marble quarry region – Makrana – allegedly the best marble in the world and used in the construction of the Taj Mahal. More lorries – how they withstand the weight of the marble is anyone’s guess.

Our hotel in Jojawar is about 300 years old with a rich history – owned at that time by nobility who collected taxes and levies from the local peasantry. The British used to be invited here to hunt in the local forests along the Aravalli mountain range.

****

We left the hotel at 10 and drove for 3 and a half hours to Udaipur. Arriving at 1.30, perfect timing for a beer. Our hotel is perched on a hilltop overlooking two lakes. Originally a palace in another place, it was transported here stone by stone and converted into a beautiful hotel with stuning views.

It is eminently suitable for a wedding celebration (ruby, ruby, ruby, ruby)
