I've officially survived my first 10 days in India, praise be! India is a manic place, hectic and noisy and frenetic and just all-around intimidating... But I've survived! I think joining up with the Intrepid tour has a lot to do with that, India is not a place I would want to brave alone. I arrived in Delhi and the representative of my hotel pick-up service was nowhere to be found, so I tagged along with a couple I'd met on the plane and ended up staying in their hotel. I was a little sick (funny getting sick BEFORE getting to India, after all the warnings I'd had about getting sick IN India) so spent the next few days holed up in my dumpy little room, but did manage to spend a few hours wandering around ... read more

Carolyn talked a lot about humiliation. These few entries have been a demonstration of that quality. Humiliation is essential if we are to grow a new purpose of living. We take such pride in ourselves as higher beings, as spiritual, as wonderful people, who are misunderstood by others and only occassionally mistreated. We will defend this false self image unto death. This has been a demonstration of humiliation, and it's not neccessary for anyone to go out of their way to do this too. There are deep humiliations just around the corner, everywhere. Can we learn from them? Can we see where we. This is the mystery of Humiliation. So I paid these guys $500 for two machine made carpets--said to be from Kashmir--after they slipped some dark goo in my tea. After awhile I ... read more

Hi everyone. We took the local bus to Ahmedabad. The bus ride was actually OK, although the ceilings were really low cause they have spaces above the proper seats for people to sit, and there were people sitting on the floor between the seats, but no chickens, so it was alright. We arrived about 1:00 PM and had decided that we were a little sick of sightseeing and were just going to chill out over cocktails. That was NOT going to happen as we were in a dry state where you need a permit to buy alcohol, luckily we had our own.. haha We did go out to the Ghandi museum and saw his house. The grounds were really nice and really quiet, it was quite relaxing. There is a lot of info on Ghandi and ... read more

This entry has nothing to do with sex. It happened in a dusty town with bad food and with an unprounoucable name. This town has the temples with the erotic statues featured in the motion picture, "A Passage to India." These temples were buried in the jungles for 700 years and were discovered by an Englishman in 1847, I think. Jungles, then dust. We in America are going through our Sexual Carnival now. Author Tom Wolfe points out it was once our sexual revolution, now our sexual carnival. OK, India went through this trifling phase about a thousand years ago. You can tell by their Bollywood movies, which have about zero kisses in them, erotically speaking, but lots of love and action and passion and what can go wrong. On the Path, it can be ... read more

Hi all This little town was nuts. I went for a walk with 2 of the guys on the tour, and before long we turned back to get to the safety of the hotel and a badly needed beer. At first the kids just followed us and would ask for pictures, so Chris would take pictures with his digital camera and show the kids.. they loved it. Before long though, they wanted to put henna on my hands, comb my hair, and one woman actually groped me. This is about when we turned back. The funniest thing was a guy riding his bicycle down the dirt street and he had turned around to look at us and he ran over a dog that was sleeping in the street. The dog was Ok and we chuckled about ... read more

So Jaipur is called the pink city and Jodphur is known as the blue city because of the (bet you guessed it already) blue buildings. The buildings here are blue because Brahmins* used to paint their homes blue with Indigo dye because it cooled the house and kept bugs away. Now anyone can paint their house blue in Jodphur, but in the old city, the blue houses remain mostly Brahmins. Ooh quick break folks, I want to make dinner before Gila gets home… OK, I know that was no time to you folks, but it was about 20 minutes to me…no fancy meal here, just corn on the cob and curd rice with ginger and pomegranates. But at least it’s made and the dishes are done and water’s boiling (can’t drink the water plain so ... read more

Hi all We arrived in Jodhpur and went to yet another fort. It was Mehrangarh Fort and its about 400 feet up on the hills above the town. Again the fort was amazing, really intricate and huge. Its amazing how they built all this stuff so long ago, this particular fort was built in 1459 and is built right into the rock. Really really cool. The views of the town from the fort were spectacular. All the buildings in the old town are painted blue and it looks fantastic from the fort. We waked down from the fort into the old town. The streets are windy and narrow and none of them are named, its crazy, I am sure I would get myself totally lost. We went out to a club, but the music was all ... read more

Well, it has been a few days since had a chance to add entries. So this is a catch-up. On Monday, we got into Jaipur about 8 PM. We had a 2nd train air-conditioned sleeper from Amritsar (much better than I expected) to Delhi with a connection to a bus to Jaipur. The only problem encouter was with the men who carry the luggage in the train station in Delhi (believe it or not, they are called "coolies"). We asked for the luggage to have it taken to the foreign visitor information office. But the coolies insisted that we go to their "information office" about a block away (apparent scam worked out with a private party). We refused. Then asked for the luggage to be taken to a taxi. Again, they wouldn't do it! We argued ... read more

Here are some photos of that Morning at the real Taj Mahal, along with of the Bodhi Tree Bookstore...acrosss the street from the chiropractic office where I've worked for more than 12 years in LA. Anybody who has worked at the Bodhi Tree for more than a few years deserves a PHd in comparitive religion and in the Humanities, at least! If you can do the Bodhi Tree Bookstore, you can do India. Most say that India takes you by surprise and whacks you side of the head, mentally, emotionally, physically, economically. Itcan do this, no matter your preparation. After "James" got off the river at the Taj Mahal, right on the riverbank there was a gong sounding. Mr Don invited him into a small one story building with chipped blue paint on stucco. Inside were ... read more

After an agonizing experience with the train from Agra to Jodhpur we decided to take it easy in Jodhpur for four days. We've been wandering around the old city, exploring the small alleys and bazaars, and experiencing the heat, the smells and the noises of the street life. It's a chaos of people, bikes, tuk-tuks, cars, cows, dogs and camels. The main streets of the city are noisy and crowded but in the bazaar area you can find many interesting places and shops, selling fabrics, clothes, shoes, spices, silvery and pretty much anything. Outside the city center there are many nice hotels and restaurants with their oasis like private gardens. It is nice to visit those places when in need of some peace and quiet. In the middle of the city rises the 550 years old ... read more
