The Pink City of Rajasthan,
Jaipur is a city soaked in royalty. Built and planned by the ruler Sawai Jai Singh II, the city has also been named in his honour. This beautiful city is also credited for being one of the first planned cities in India.
The city of
Jaipur owes its sobriquet to the pink buildings that dominate the city’s landscape. Most of the older buildings and the city’s layout has been done following the ancient art and science of Vaastu Shastra. It was under the architectural guidance of scholar Vidyadhar Bhattacharya that the city was built, taking into account many Indian classical treatise such as Shilpa Shastra and Vaastu Shastra among many others. It is believed that the nine rectangular sectors of the city symbolizes the nine divisions of the universe. Another interesting aspect in the making of the city was the use of uniform colour pink in its many structures and buildings. This is believed to have been used since the colour pink is said to represent the Rajput royalty.
