24th December ’11 Bundi to Bassi to Castle Bijaipur I knew it was too good to last! 6.15 am start this morning and off to get the ‘local’ train to Bassi. This we are told will be one of our highlights no less, having been on plenty of trains I am a bit sceptical. When the train arrived we all piled in with all the Indian people and had a frantic moment of trying to find a seat, we had been told we would be lucky to find one, but as it turned out we all got them with no problems and got our luggage stowed away under and over the seats. God knows what the poor young lad who was sat on his own in our section thought when suddenly 7 westerners piled in and ... read more

After a 3 hour wait in the freezing cold at Bundi rail station for a train that was nowhere to be seen, we decided to travel by way of jeep to our next destination. Our first night in the Bassi area was spent camping by a lake and under the stars. I should mention here that it was actually luxury camping with ensuites and all! My kind of camping!!! As we were pretty much in the middle of no where, it was the perfect place to just sit back and relax. Our second night in the Bassi region was spent at the luxurious Castle Bijaipur. The Castle is a fortified mansion and is still owned and run by the Singh family, who have been in the area since they can trace back. We were definitely spoilt ... read more

It’s an early start as we join villagers for a 3 hour train ride to the small town of Bassi. It’s times like these that I find most fascinating. As the train pulls up and everyone impatiently bundles there way onto the carriages you somehow scramble through the sea of people to find a spare couple of feet to yourself. There’s no luxury on these trains. You’re luck if you’re able to find a wooden seat at the most however there’s something captivating and intriguing about it all. It’s here that you can really interact with the locals and experience everyday life in India. There’s so many interesting people that I find myself staring at and can’t help but grab my camera and snap away at the locals. Although there doesn’t seem to be much order ... read more

Sarah was actually awake and in the shower before the alarm - strange. Really nice place to wake up though. Breakfast was great. Had toast with omlette, toast with honey, and some porridge with a little honey. Oh and a veg cutlet. Took the jeeps to a local village where the kids were getting ready for school and all wanting ‘one photo’. We had a wander around and saw the school house and different areas of the village, which is divided into separate areas depending on jobs. Saw the barbers living area - that’d be my family. Also stopped to look around the different crops in a field before arriving at the castle. It was great - when we arrived there was someone drumming and someone on a horn and we given flower garlands - a ... read more

Was very hard to get up this morning but managed. Local train was better than had been described. No chickens or goats in our carriage. Sarah and myself ended up in a carriage down from the rest where a guy kindly gave up his seat and we sat in the compartment with him and his family. Train was of course 30m late. A woman who looked like the mother in law was asleep along half of the seats, which seemed unfair as people were sitting in the doorway. One kid, a young boy, was left a tiny spot at her feet. His sister, a bit older was opposite (same side as us) with their dad next (who had insisted we sit there). Their mother was up in the luggage rack above the seats having a nap. ... read more

I'm all by myself Castle stay in my own room Great chill out spaces. We had an early morning start where we had to catch a train. We made it to the station with plenty of time to spare. Nothing too exciting other than some stray dogs that were getting frisky. At one point Mel, Shauna, Brian and I were playing Eye Spy to pass the time! Then I don't know how the conversation started but Brian stated talking to this Indian guy and his daughter. Then at one point the Indian guy points to Brian and then to me..."is that your daughter?" LOL So of course it became a running joke that Brian is my dad and Shauna my mum. Amazing since I'm almost two years older than the two of them! LOL We didn't ... read more
