That is India. It started with my brothers IST - that’s Indian Standard Timing - if you don’t already know what that means - basically there is an inherent gene that Indians seem to have - where all concept of time is lost on them…. Yup we were running very close to the line. I arrived at Heathrow with 15 minutes to spare to bag drop and then 5 minutes to get through security. So image my surprise when once getting through - we were delayed flying off - IST of course  We were staying in a city in the Punjab called Jalandhar, we have a place there so it’s great to be able to come and wind down. Sunbath on the roof in the late afternoons - nothing could be better. Trust me hotels ... read more

Written on Oct-17th, Paris, France. I was surprised to wake up around quarter to eight on my first morning while staying with the Klair's. It turned out that Bahadur had gotten a hold of my mobile at some point during the previous day and had turned off my alarm, wanting me to sleep in. He had told me the night before that he usually got up around five in the morning, and I had told him I wanted to get up with him. Apparently he either did not understand me, did not believe me, or just had other ideas in general. I had an amazing sleep that night, most likely the result of my first night of silence since arriving in India. Shortly after waking up Mata Jee brought me tea and toast for breakfast. I ... read more

Written on Oct-16th, Paris, France. This is going to be aother really long entry. More so for myself than for anyone else reading this. Visiting the Klair's on their farm has been an absolute highlight of my trip to India, and I am going to want to come back and re-read this from time to time I am sure. I will split it into a couple of different parts so as to not take up too much space, but in an effort not to forget certain details years from now I will use as much detail as I want to! If you don't like it, don't read it all! So much has happened over the last few days, its going to be pretty tough to boil it all down to one of these blog entries. As ... read more

The Village of the Peacock…Moranwali, Today Saroop and Maina took me to the village I have heard the most of since I was little. Sychronistically, today is Sept 14, my dad’s and his twin sister’s birthday. On the way to Moranwali, we picked up a few boxes of sweets for the occasion and as an offering to our hosts in the village. It was again a very emotional day…more so than yesterday. We started out quite early and headed towards Horshiarpur, then Garshankar. Of course when I ride in a vehicle here in India, my eyes are peeled and my focus is intense just savouring everything: the landscape and culture. Even the most mundane thing is a fascination for me. I watch as people go about their daily routine. As we drove through the city of ... read more

Home Sweet Ancestral Home, This past few days has been an emotional journey. Truthfully speaking, I wanted to put the visit to my father’s villages off until I had overcome the culture shock here in India…and so this is what I have done. The last thing I wanted was to be shocked at the conditions of the poor in India and transfer this to the plight of my dad in the village. I was extremely fearful of this and reluctant to visit the villages too early in my journey before I had desensitized myself to India in general. I have been coaching myself for this part of the trip for many, many months. I have been reminding myself that my emotions are true and I can express them, yet I need not have an attachment ... read more
