Background: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.

Until recently Nasik was well known for its grapes - but mostly table grapes. Slowly the vineyards in Nasik have been experimenting with Wine-grapes and the result is fabulous. Nasik has steadily improved its reputation as a wine lovers paradise. The closest vineyards/winery to the city is Sula Wines. Its a great spot for a day picnic. You can visit their website www.sulawines.com and make reservation for the winery tour. Usually you do not need a reservation as every hour they have a tour. Varietals planted include Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Zinfandel. Duri [View Full Entry]

Hari Om, Life at the ashram continues to be an experience that I am truly blessed to be having. I cannot believe that I only have a week remaining! I have learned so much and am eager to get home and help all of the people I love so much. Yoga is truly a path of personal development, but part of that development is helping those around you. I will be back in the States on Tuesday, Dec. 11. I fly into Michigan. Sean and I will spend Christmas in Evansville. Then we will be in Chicago for New Years. I [View Full Entry]

Hari Om, That is the yogic greeting at the ashram. It is in reference to the supreme powers in the universe. Life at the ashram is peaceful and quite beautiful. The setting is amazing. I walk out my front door to see the beautiful countryside framed with an interesting range of small mountains. The mountains and entire area are said to be very sacred and devotees of Lord Shiva make pilgrimages here from all over India. The weather is perfect right now. It is cool in the mornings and in the evenings and sunny and warm during the day. The ashram [View Full Entry]

It occurs to me that I haven’t really written anything about my original time in Nasik & Trimbak. Basically I did yoga and a short course in Ayurveda. It was great. There were lots of wonderfully great people. We had great chats, learnt great things and did great things. On our days off we also did great things. I went to lots of temples and saw bathing places, not just our showers, and the Godavari River. I may write more later, there is just so much to write. I gained a certificate, or three, which say I am qualified to teach [View Full Entry]

Nasik is a really friendly place, so is Trimbuk (where the ashram is actually situated).. it's no suprise I want to stay longer. The yoga course is finishing in a couple of days, and the plan is to stay for the ayurveda and then volunteer for a while. Editing the Yoga books. Hmm.. my literary skills are pretty non-existent (can't pull the wool over ur eyes can i?!) But at least it'll be a slight improvement. Or at least it should be, I am english.. There's a lot to help with, whatever it may be. Since uploading my pics on [View Full Entry]

So here I am in Nashik.....about 170km (6 hours) on a non-airconditioned bus from Mumbai..... The Ashram - Yoga Vidya Dham - is surrounded by such beauty.....mountains that resemble temples and such an expanse of beautiful nature. It's very sacred and spiritual land and you can feel the energy of the place!! The perfect setting to wake up before sunrise and start chanting mantras and meditating before a couple of hours of yoga asanas. After the asana class in the morning, we would have a few lectures then yoga nidra (the best relaxation I think I've ever had.....where you're 'riding [View Full Entry]

Our 100th Blog Entry!! Nasik (or Nashik) is one of India's most famous holy cities sitting on the banks of the spiritual River Godavari but that's not the main reason why we came. It is a place of common pilgrimage amongst millions of Hindus but that's not why we came. Nasik is home to thousands of temples and colourful bathing Ghats but that's not why we came. No, the reason we came is because Nasik is the home of the pioneers of Indian wine - you may scoff but it's true and we were ready to take a quaff and taste [View Full Entry]

Well we got onto the train at 2pm in jaipur and reached Mumbai at 8am on the 14th. The train journey was funny, well as I said before we were in non- AC 2nd class and you have every kind of person walking down the aisles from chai wala's (one of the chai wala's had a rap going on it was too funny) to poor people, people dragging themselves with no legs down the aisle begging and even hijrah's (transvestites). Actually that’s a funny story this woman/man was going around making people give her money and really shouting and clapping. She/he [View Full Entry]

2006………6wks-4th CYCLING TRIP-Gujarat & Southern Rajasthan, INDIA........... I put my bike together at the train station with the idea that I would have a pleasant ride into town from the railway station but alas I find that putting FRAGILE on lugagge doesn't mean a lot. Peddalingpete became pissedoffpete when I realised that the main gear sprocket had been bent badly. It was initially unrideable but about 45mins work by good bike mechanics who haven't seen such a bike before got it going but it is a bit cluncky. I'm pretty relieved actually as I thought I might have t [View Full Entry]

2006………6wks-4th CYCLING TRIP-Gujarat & Southern Rajasthan, INDIA........... Coming to a country that values its cows over some of its people; that has about 1 billion people who don't share a common language in the world's largest democracy; where you need to avoid a cow, donkey, pig, pack of dogs and human excement in the middle of the main street of a major city of over 1mill; and where you can buy 40 malaria tabs for $1 (as against $10.25 for 7 in Australia) etc... well you just gotta laugh.
