A poem from Cousin JohnThank you cousin John for this superb (and might I add quintessentially English!) piece of poetry!
Day 3 and time to get my blog going! Mumbai is an incredible place, you can't begin to take it in in a couple of days. I am amazed at the contrasts - some fantastic architecture (old and new) yet at the same time complete chaos and stark poverty. The people here are extremely friendly and eager to help which has been very reassuring, and thankfully English is a main language here.
The taxi drivers seem to navigate like bats, using their horns as a kind of echo-finder. There appears to be no order - on the few roads where there are lane markings these are ignored in favour of constantly tooting your presence to your fellow road users. This lasts long into the night so I was relieved I brought my ear plugs!
During the day there appear to be a number of dead dogs strewn around the city, at train platforms; in little stairwells; on street corners. On closer inspection it seems they are actually gently breathing, snoozing in the heat and waiting for evening... when they join in with the cacaphony of the traffic.
I think I've done quite well so far, I can't really blend in (I
Indian TVMy first night in a hotel near Mumbai Aiport channel flicking in the evening. I thought the character and expression captioned here is priceless
am amazed at how few caucasian people I've seen here) but I haven't been scammed yet. It's on the way in or out of your hotel that they are waiting for you, to come and visit a shop, take a tour etc - you have to be quite resolute if you want to make your original destination!
Tonight I take the 18.50 express train to Jaipur (arrives at 0800 tomorrow morning) - I am looking forward to getting away from the big smoke that is Mumbai! Luckily I managed to get a first class ticket, at one point it looked like only 3rd class. I don't actually know what the difference is, however it was more reassuring while I'm still finding my way!
Finally - it was great to see so many of you on the Friday night, sorry I didn't get to speak to those who left me messages the next day, as you can imagine it was manic. For those of you who left at the right time on Friday night and didn't push on to 151, you didn't miss much - apart from someone throwing up on my leg (kind of warm to begin with...) Ew
View from Mumbai HotelOn my second night I stayed near the Gateway of India in Colaba in South Mumbai. Not especially scenic as you can see, hence I was off to Rajasthan as soon as possible the next day!
