It takes at least 2-3 days to get fully adjusted to the time difference between the US and south Asia. I woke up way too early the first morning and used the time to take a driving tour of the city.
One of the sites we saw was a fishing village right on the beach where they had tall racks full of drying fish. A lot of Bombay reminded me of a post on deputy-dog.com showing the contrasting pictures between rich and poor. You can read that
here. (I really recommend this blog - it's one of the best I've ever read -
deputy-dog.com)
I later tried to take pictures of this myself on the flight out of Bombay to Delhi.
So Bombay is right on the water and the beach is a popular tourist destinations especially in the summer when people come from all over the country. Take a look at the pictures to see what the scene is like at Juhu Beach. It's pretty hot and humid during the day but around 7pm is a good time to go take a walk. The sun is setting which makes for a beautiful view and the ocean
breeze feels cool. If you're a fan of roasted corn, there's no shortage of people to buy it from as take a walk. While on the topic of food, I must make a PSA about Alfonso Mangoes in Bombay. They are only available in the southern part of the country and have a distinct sweet taste, a must try for fruit lovers. While there we even had a cake made with sliced mango on top from the local bakery.
The late evening is also a good time to venture in the city. We spent one evening driving into the downtown area and walking along the water in the area known as the Queen's necklace which is adjacent to the Gateway of India, a popular tourist destination. There are a lot of nice hotels in the area and it seemed like that is where the nightlife was located as well.
To wrap up the Bombay summary - We visited a mall (Galaxy? some celestial name) and it looked like any mall back home and thats including the prices. If you go into a western type establishment expect to pay western type prices. I was pleasantly surprised that the mall
had a Nandos - a restaurant I first discovered in London that has some of the best chicken I've ever tasted. The menu was quite different but regardless it was Nandos with perinaise!
We left Bombay by air from the domestic airport. The airline we took was SpiceJet to Delhi and although we didn't get fed the flight was uneventful. It's important to check your depart time the day of because times are not set in stone and may even leave 15-20 min early which would be a bad thing if you're cutting it close.
