The train from Agra to Jhansi was really calm and comfortable, probably more so than the trains we have in England! Our hotel in Orchha was really beautiful as well. There was a four poster bed and even a swimming pool! We did not expect to be staying in places like this, but it was certainly nothing to moan about! We had the most amazing day in Orchha, the town was a welcome relax from the hustle and bustle of both Delhi and Agra, and all of the people were really welcoming. Our guide for the day, Rajish, who approached us in the deserted palace walls, invited us to his house for some chai and to meet his family. Following this they invited us back to the house for dinner that evening, which really put Robbie ... read more

We were lucky and had a second day in Orchha today. This meant that we were allowed a little bit of a sleep in and didn't have to meet up until 8:30am this morning. Our first stop of the morning was the Orchha palace where we had a local guide show us around the ruins. These ruins were really quite lovely and are about 400 years old. It was another place where you didn't really have to try to hard to visualise just how beautiful it would have been when it was new. The Hindus who lived in the royal palace had some beliefs that were quite similar to the muslims of the time in that they kept concubines, however these concubines were mostly only companions to the queen, and were not used for anything physical. ... read more

Today was a travel day. We had to be up bright and early to get a local bus from Chanderi to Orcha. Our guide had told us that we would have to walk for 15 minutes to get to the bus so it was a very pleasant surprise to find that the bus was waiting for us at the gate to our hotel this morning. I wasn't really looking for to a 15 minute walk with my pack on my back. The bus ride itself was relatively uneventful. Although the driving certainly wasn't uneventful. There were many times when the bus driver would break very hard to miss something completley random like a cow taking a stroll across the road, and I would go flying towards the front of the bus. We were sitting right up ... read more

31 Dec - we catch yet another train this morning to Jhansi then travel by tempo - a jumbo size auto rickshaw / tuktuk that sits 6 people rather than 3, to the quaint village of Orccha. En route, we stop at Tarragram, a unique paper making plant set up to assist tribal women from the area. We watch the whole paper making process from recycled clothing then buy lots of nice stationery items. Our hotel is a gorgeous resort with pool and luxury tents. We have a quick lunch then explore some of the many monuments and temples in this area, including the Chaturbhuj Temple whiich has amazing architecture combining Hindu AND Muslim influences. Watch the sunset from the fairytale-esque towers and enjoy the rural views before striking some yoga poses with the girls for ... read more

Orccha was a really neat little place to stop over for two days. Too bad that the food wasn't better or we may have stayed a little longer. That can ALWAYS make or break a place for us. The town itself is actually a town, not a large city, like we have been visiting as of late. The journey to get there turned out to be much more complicated, and longer, than we had imagined. From Lucknow, we had booked a train ticket that would take us to Jhansi, from which is would be a quick 40 minute auto-rickshaw ride to Orccha. Well, the first time that we attempted the train we arrived at the station at 6:30 am to learn that our 7am train had been delayed by...6 hours! We made our way back to ... read more

There is nothing like traveling on a motorbike: the wind in your hair; the sun piercing and aging your skin; the smog in your face; the smiles you get 80% of the time; the waves you get 50% of the time; the confused "is that really a traveler on a motorbike and not a tourbus" stare you get 20% of the time; the sexy farmer tan you get from your sneaker, capri pants and tank top; the freedom to stop over wherever and whenever you want; having a bug or small pebble hit your face; having bug juice splatter on you after it first hit Elad's face; having dust in your eyes that creates a never-ending flow of tears; and when the ride is all done and you've reached your destination, getting off the bike ... read more

We were in Jhansi to attend a friend’s wedding. A group of colleagues from office had assembled at Jhansi, a small city in the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India made famous by Rani LaxmiBai, the legendary queen who fought valiantly against the British during the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. Excited as I was to visit this historic city, little did I know what a wonder waited for me in the little town of Orchha, hardly an hours drive from Jhansi. It was winter in India. Usually rains are unlikely during this time of the year, but it had been raining all through our stay in Jhansi. When we started for Orchha after seeing off most of our friends returning to Delhi, it was close to dusk, and the rain clouds were gathering. We, a ... read more

“For the animals shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complicated than ours, they move finished and completed, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings, they are other nations - caught with ourselves in a net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth.” Henry Beston The cycle out of Jaipur was really not bad, we even met another Indian Cyclist on a very old road bike, and it was the first and only Indian bike we have seen with gears. In fact once we were back on the bikes much of the bad vibes we had experienced in Jaipur melted away, as the simple ... read more
