I currently write from a one-computer little installation in the lazy town of Orchha. It has proven to be the ideal place for me to relax and gear up for the months alone that now loom ahead! Though it hasn't got the hassle and noise of other tourist centres, Orchha is blessed with a heavy spattering of 16th century Mughal temples, forts, palaces and other ruins which I've been having fun exploring alone. It conjours happy memories of years gone by when I would scamper and clamber over old dusty staircases and bat-infested caves in far-away countries! I stay one more day here before moving on to Khajuraho and one of the best tourist destinations in all of India. But first, an update on the 25th - Aneirin's last day - when we visited the undisputed ... read more

My day at Orchha involved a lot of sweating, walking around and waiting. More on that later. First, let's finish Gwalior off. After my blog update yesterday I headed to a nice vegetarian restaurant that was in my guide book and spotted some fellow travelers. They were having a pizza... They should have had the paneer chole bathura. The best ever. The TV was also on for entertainment. I was probably the only one watching though. First there was a teenage soap opera that involved a lot of slow-motion, close-ups and faces ("Give me confusion! Give me anger! Give me love! Give me curiosity!"). It was in Hindi but the storyline was basically boy 1 likes girl, girl secretly likes boy 1, boy 2 likes girl, boy 2 now hates boy 1, quirky supporting character makes ... read more

ORCHHA, MADHYA PRADESH, INDIA. Sunday 1 April, 2012. We were collected by Mr Barun at the crack of dawn and taken to Agra Station for our second train ride to Jhansi. We had again reduced our luggage to a couple of backpacks and Mr Barun was going to take our large cases on to Delhi. The journey took 2 hours 40 minutes and we were met again by a local agent and introduced to our guide. We then drove through the countryside out of Uttar Pradesh (where Jhansi is located) into Madhya Pradesh. The journey took about 3 hours. Today was the last day of a major Hindu festival, and as we approached Orchha we were caught in a huge stationary throng of people, two wheelers, three wheelers, bikes, carts and everything else under the sun. ... read more

Namaste!! We went to Amritsar the morning after the wedding, REALLY tired but reeling with good spirits after how much fun we had had the night before. I hadn't really kept warm enough the night of the wedding (have I mentioned it's cold in Delhi? It is cold in Delhi) and so was feeling a little feverish as we arrived at the train station, where, almost unbelievably (but not really because things like this happen constantly in India), we were met by the exact same cycle-rickshaw driver who had met me 2 years ago when I went to Amritsar the first time. He was a really nice older man who spoke excellent English and knew that Vancouver had an Indian member of Parliament (even I didn't know that) and talked us into using him the following ... read more

In India under the left supported alliance which has allowed the Congress Party to stay in power, a number of radical bills have passed through the Parliament in recent years. These include The Right to Work Bill; The Right to Information Bill; and most recently The Right of children to Free and Compulsory Education Act (or The Right to Education Bill as it is known) which came into force on April 1, 2010. This historic law gives the people of India the right to an education on the same legal footing as (for example) the right to life as provided by Article 21A of the Indian Constitution. Under this Act, every child in the age group of 6-14 years is to be provided 8 years of elementary education in an age appropriate classroom in the vicinity ... read more

We arrived to the picturesque town of Orccha to see a completely different side to India that I have experienced so far. Situated on the banks of the Betwa River, Orchha is still as it was centuries ago. There is a high abundance of palaces and temples in the "Bundlekhand" region as it used to be the centre for the Bundelas (Rajput) Clan. We spent our time here visiting the Palace and the many temples. We also viewed a puja ceremony at the Ram Raja Temple - in which we were again the main attraction. It's funny to think that despite being in a place of worship (and in the middle of a service), people were running around wanting to chat, take photos or just stare at us! During our Orchha stay we again tested our ... read more

OK - I was meant to be in Delhi still all this week for the last week of "in country orientation" as part of my one month prep for my NGO placement in Orissa. However - the program was looking re markedly 'thin on the ground' to say the least so I 'negotiated' with the Volunteer organisation I am here under to take a little side trip instead. I had intended to visit Orchha on a good friend's advice (Leila) in February - but due to changes in the NGO work arrangements had to cut my free travel short. So.... given I was in Delhi - and Orchha was in striking distance (about 5 hours travel away) and I had the time (albeit stolen from 'in country orientation'!) - off I went. On the way I ... read more

Day 4 - Orchha Sorry no internet connection for a few days in the jungle, trying to play catch up, but still no photos. The day started with a tour of 4 of the palaces of Orchha. Our guide told us that there are 6 palaces and 22 temples in the town and it's surroundings. Our tuk-tuk's took us into the town, where everyone was being very offical, as there was a ministrial visit to the town so the police were trying to direct traffic and look like they knew what they were doing. The Jahangiri Mahal Palace was one of four built that we saw that formed a complex. One was built by the son of the king, one for his dancer mistress, one by the King and one for his friend. The one built ... read more

Day 3 - Delhi to Ochhra Notes - thanks for the messages, and we forgot to mention the weather. It's hot, really hot! Due to the internet speed being that of an ambling cow, we are struggling to add any more photos, so bear with us, we will try and add some later. We left the hotel to catch the 6am train and were allocated seat numbers, which given the chaos on the station was probably a good thing. Not long after the train had set off, we were brought a flask of hot water and a small tray with tea bag, milk and sugar. Under the tray was a small menu, listing the two breakfast options, veggie and non-veggie. We opted for the non-veggie which promised to be an omlette. Breakfast came with brown ... read more
