Spela and Asha

Spela is from Slovenia and donates her time at the home.
**I was in no way affected by the recent terrorist attacks. With the distance from here to Mumbai being around that of the Bay Area and the Midwest I am completely safe.**

Today I went to Divine Childrens Home with my friend Spela. This home is ran by Alice Walker (not the Color Purple author) and currently has 33 orphan children living in it. The ages of the children are 1 year to 13 years.

I spoke with Alice about the home and we talked about ways they could raise money. They are getting ready to move into a newly built building that will house 100 children. I talked with her about starting a vegetable and flower garden at the new location and told her that I would help her organize it and help her approach the neighbor about loaning some land and fund raising to get the garden going.

I think about my mother in her garden when I still lived at home on Sierra Ave. It would be about sunset on a warm summers day and she would be out watering the garden every evening. Mom would be at peace swaying back and forth with the hose in hand. A bottle of miracle grow, well expired, would be at the end of the nozzle, mom's theory was that there maybe a little solution left in the bottle so it wouldn't hurt to keep it on...and all summer it stay attached. A football would then fly into the garden and all hell would break loose.

So the garden is a special place for me. Something I would like to share with these children. I told Alice that it would teach them a lot about responsibility and that they would also take pride in their garden. The vegetables provided would also make it very rewarding.

The children are full of energy and absolutely hilarious. They were enjoying my showing of their pictures and videos. Everyone would crowd around the camera to check it out and crack up.

I plan to visit the home at least once a month and am excited about building a relationship with this home.

Also the website is finished so check out www.phykon.com.

Surprisingly the kids were not creeped out by my mustache. After looking at this photo I am. I will probably shave it. After the recent terrorist attacks I thought it would be a good way to blend in. My facial hair is pathetic and I am experimenting with new things. It hurt me ego to see a twelve year old boy with a thicker beard.

They all were eating biscuits right before we left.
