I planned my trip to India as my friend suggested Kerala. She thinks its much safer for a single woman.Practicing yoga for many years now I wanted to go a little further into the philosophies of Patanjali.I searched to find an ashram in Kerala. The two options I had was a big crowded yoga place and a very small traditional place. The smaller one was directly run by a woman.I chose it.It was a good choice i realise always.Tulasidalam Yoga ashram is in a very small village ,thelliyur. The ashram is on a vast span of open land with lush greens. An ancient temple on the premises. So very few people! Only five people can stay at a time! The yoga philosophies were taken by this woman Sindu. Is she a Sanyasi? In her colourful indian clothes she glowed. The teachings ... read more

For days I've been disturbed by a statement I made in an yoga forum. So last week I toldSindu chechi about the discussion and the statement I made on Gunas. Prasanna (P): I know something on gunas... from what I have read and a little more from the way I experience it ...but now I need your guidance....Chechi.. I said in one of the forums ..that.. Kali is tamasic. I don't want to change the statement for I don't feel wrong in what I said..but I can't explain it anymore than that. Chechi is smiling... Sindu chechi (S): I mention it always ... the deeper levels on realization path is not to be discussed in open....where people of different levels of involution come in.It can confuse and irritate those who have yet to transcend to reach ... read more

Nicole and I have arrived at the Vijiana cultural center in the small town of aranmula. We are here for a week to take cooking classes and malyalam. THe center offers all sorts of classes from kathakali, dance, kalari, hindi, table, painting, wood carving, yoga etc.. The people are tremendously friendly. Nisha, our cooking teacher, is an absolutely adorable woman with mad cooking skills and quite good english. (as my malyalam stilll has a little ways to go....) The recipes are fun but i think my favourite is the wrapping (take home package) of banana leaves. SOme of the ingredients are going to be a little bit tough to find. Fresh coconut is in everything and all of the kitchens are equipped with coconut carvers... Not to mention the crazy machete looking tool used to break ... read more

Well here I am in India. An amazing diverse country. Rich, poor; desert, beach and spiritual enlightenment. You name it; India's got it. No matter where you go, the culture and colours are always intense. I am in Kerala now studying just a few of the many Indian arts. But there are so many its very hard to choose. My classes are great with very good and patient teachers as I enevitably make many mistakes. I first came to India to meet up with my mum and we travelled all around the southern end of India. From Kochi to Kumily (and Periar wildlife sacturary) to Chennnai then Mamallapuram (try saying that 5 times fast) Then onto Bangalore and upto Hami. Then only a quick stop in Bangalore before we went our seperate ways and I came ... read more

I wrote my last entry in a little 'net place on Lighthouse Beach in Kovalam. Kovalam's a very touristy town hugging the Keralan coastline, lined with shops selling souvenirs for the multitudinous hordes of western and richer north Indian tourists and restaurants which all boast to sell the finest fresh-caught seafood. The three of us (Racheal (our housemate from last year), Jenny arrived in Kovalam after an 8 hour bus-ride down from the hills, tired, hot and sweaty. Finding cheap places to stay has proven a little more difficult in the last month since we joined Rachael - I'm not certain whether it's because we've visited more expensive tourist destinations or because Rachael has higher standards of accomodation that we have. Either way, we've had to settle for paying an average of £2.50 a night each ... read more
