... read more

Before I start the blog of the day some important information: 1) I AM back in Brussels, this blog is about the trip I did with Nadja 60 days ago! 2) I am not sending a mail at every post, but you can easily see the daily updates by choosing a post and then hitting next/previous at this address: http://www.travelblog.org/Bloggers/Frederic-on-the-road/ So now the trek: We're finally starting our trek, many info in the video file. But also: We're starting from Lamayuru at 3500m and are going to Darcha over Padum. The trek is also commonly known as "Across Zanskar". We are going to cross the old kingdom of Zanskar to end up in Himachal Pradesh. We're never going to be at altitudes below 3000 m and we'll have several high passes, the highest will be 5100m! ... read more

Yesterday we saw a group with mules who arrived from Darcha, Yiiiiihaaa, we'll try to hire them for our trek. But our enthusiasm was quickly extinguished. The guide told us that they were already booked for their return trip :-(((( So, this morning we got up very early to go to the children's morning puja (prayers). All the videos are still in the lost files cloud :-( Anyway, there was actually a special puja today in the main hall. It was paid by a tour operator who was giving a special treatment to it's clients. I must say that was very good and interesting. The guide was a woman from Quebec who is married to a Ladakhi. She organized this special puja, as it gives some financial support to the gompa, and her group gets to ... read more

We are in Lamayuru!! Yesterday we finally took a taxi to go to Lamayuru. We were too late for a bus, so we had to take a private taxi. It cost us about 30 euros, a fortune here, but not too expensive for a 3 hour journey in a mini van with exhaust gasses in the cabin. Everything went smoothly and the driver was kind enough to drive us around the little village of Lamayuru to help us find a hotel/guest house. Lamayuru is not that big but it's on a hill, and as we're still not completely fit and especially with all our bags, it was much easier this way. We finally settled for a "home stay". It means we stayed in a room of a local family. We started to spread the word around ... read more

Quelle excursion! Les chauffeurs doivent ... read more

Hiring two-wheelers from “Himalaya bikes” near the main street of Leh, we headed past Chilling and the Zanskar River towards our destination, the province of Dha-Hanu in the far west of Ladakh. “Himalaya bikes” is a very good place to hire motorbikes in Leh by the way. The people running it are very reasonable and prices are astoundingly cheap. We took a detour to Likir to see the Dalai Lama’s occasional residency. The statue of the Buddha surrounded by the bright ladakhi flowers was wonderful to behold A further detour to Yangthang took us through Nevada like scenery with layered drops of sandstone and moonlike panoramas. We turned back where the road became extremely bumpy. We passed a long military convoy of 30 or so trucks and then became completely covered in exhaust fumes from all ... read more
