:-D Podvecer sme este cvicne vybehli cca do 4000 m.n.m. k stupe nad mestom. Bol odtial nadherny vyhlad a este sa nam krasne rozisli mraky akurat ked sme tam vysli. Len nas ten vystup skoro dorazil takych nie uplne aklimatizovanych. ... read more

Leaving the Mountains

If I had to describe my last couple weeks the first word I would use is wet. The monsoon has been in full swing since I've come back from Ladakh, and the mountain state of Himachal Pradesh is experiencing its hardest monsoon in over 50 years. While it doesn't rain all the time, in many places the clouds never lift and nothing dries out between showers. I spent my last couple weeks in the Himalaya in the Kullu and Parvati valleys staying in several towns and villages before deciding to head back down to the plains. From Manali I left to Kasol, a backpacker enclave that was almost entirely full of stoned Israeli travelers. After a night there I was more than ready to head further up the valley, this time to the village of Kalga. ... read more

Zazraky sa deju, sme v Kaze a maju tu internet! Je to mensi zazrak, lebo tu momentalne nejde ani len elektrika a v celom meste je tma. Este ze tu maju generator. :-) Ale tak ideme od zaciatku. Rano o siedmej sme stepovali pred hotelom a cakali nas shared taxi. Sme ale celkom radi ... read more

Takze zajtra odchadzame z Manali. Vybavili sme si shared taxi do Kazy. Je to cca desat hodinova cesta uz do budhistickej casti Indie blizsie k Tibetu. Celkom sme zvedavi ako to bude prebiehat, lebo sa tam ide cez dva priesmyky - Rohtang Pass (3978 m.n.m.) a Hamta Pass (4270 m.n.m.). Celkom sa tam uz tesime lebo by to mala byt ovela zaujimavejsia krajina, viac podobna Ladakhu alebo Tibetu. Ale zase netreba to ... read more

My sme vstupili. Rozdiel sme pripisali tomu, ze on si nezobral plavky. :-D Po kludnom lete sme pristali na letisku v Delhi, ... read more

Good afternoon people, time for another update!! I have actually come across a couple of minor problems since the last entry I submitted, so this update won't be anywhere near as busy as the last one, hence less reading for you which you are no doubt ecstatic about! This episode begins in a little town called Pushkar. Now I ended up here because, after complaining that I was moving along too slowly and taking action to tackle this problem, seemed to get carried away and sped along far too quickly during the last leg of the trip (really can't quite seem to get the balance right!), so came to this quiet little town in order to get some chill out time! And that's exactly what I did, as there really isn't an awful lot to do ... read more

I never explained at the beginning my reason for being in India - I am on my medical school elective. If you travel much, you have probably met someone on their elective. Every summer, in all corners of the world, you may encounter suspiciously young looking people who insist they are (*cough* nearly) doctors here to do voluntary work in a hospital, trying hard to give off an air of altruism while simultaneously spending much of their time drinking and scuba diving. These are medical elective students. I am no exception. At the start of final year (in European med schools, anyway), as a reward for surviving this far, we're given a summer to go work abroad, anywhere in the world we choose. Of course we're not much use because despite our four-or-five years of study ... read more

The news this day was that the Rhotang Pass was closed but would hopefully reopen later in the day so we headed off in nice weather back towards Khoksar where the army were holding up traffic while the pass was cleared. A Dutch guy stopped for a chat. He was doing the tour the hard way and taking all his gear with him (we had support vans carrying most of ours). He opened the conversation in Dutch! Long time since I've been mistaken for a dutchman (since my blonde hair fell out or went grey). He had also visited New Zealand and said, "no offence but this is even more beautiful". I had to agree with him. I hope that's not treachery? After eating lunch there again, we saw an army truck heading up the pass ... read more

Rest day in Keylong

Today we were supposed to press on to Sarchu passing over the Baralacha La pass at 4830m. There we were to spend the night in tents before turning around and heading back to Manali the way we'd come as the way from there to Leh was impassable. Unfortunately the news of the way ahead was that it would be very wet, rivers would be high and probably bridges washed out. We'd then arrive wet and cold at the tents with no way to dry out or get warm (no power). The decision was that we'd have an unplanned rest day at Keylong, instead. A small group would take a ride up to the next town in the direction of Sarchu, about 11km, where the tour leaders would visit a child they sponsored there and have lunch. ... read more
