DAY 7 15th January 2011 Woke at 06.00am with thunderstorm and fog! Due to weather and on advise from our driver, we decided to change our plans as the long drive to Dharamsala seemed a bit pointless in these conditions! It was going to be a 10 hour drive anyway, which we didn’t realise so we were happy to visit another hill station – Kasauli. Kasauli (6000ft above sea level) is the closest hill station to the plains and is an army base. The authorities have imposed planning restrictions which means that the old town remains as it was in the British Raj with old fashioned buildings with gabled roofs and wooden balconies. There was supposed to be some wonderful views on the way there and also views of Shimla, but because of the fog we ... read more

If you go asking people to name something that makes them instantly connect to the childhood memories, chances are that the cycle would probably feature prominently in that list. The romance of the cycle is undying. Yes we love our fuel guzzling sedans and motorbikes, but the cycle tugs the strings of the heart as it reminds us of the sunny days of our childhood and passage to adulthood. For me, I remember my daily 5 km ride to my school from home, the long aimless rides with friends in winter afternoons, wading through knee deep waterlogged streets on my cycle during rains and foremost I remember long walks with my high school girlfriend (whom I ended up marryingJ) when I would just talk with her and walk my cycle alongside. Call me fickle, or someone ... read more

This weekend myself and my wife planned to chill out at kasauli. We decided to drive down there covering Timber trail also at Parwanoo which falls enroute. We started off at 7:30 in the morning from our house at Panchkula, so as to reach while its still pleasent. We were at Timber Trial around 8:15. Timer trial is famous for two things...its resort and cable car that take you up through dangerous yet beautiful valley to the hill top, where there are cottages and another resort. But the cable car was supposed to start at 9:00 AM for the public. At first we were thinking of postponing this stop but later decided to experience it. The weather was extremely pleasant and there were not a single tourist like us , atleast at that point of ... read more

After trying couple of hotels I knew names of I finally settled for a guesthouse situated at the end of the road near old Kasauli overlooking the valley below. The owner proudly told me that when sky is clear I could see Chandigarh from the terrace! Around 5 PM Kasauli was enveloped by the monsoon mist. It was pretty beautiful sight watching mist trapped in pine trees. I rested for sometime before I got out again and just walked on the roads checking them out where did they lead. I resisted going full hog because it was getting dark and I was not sure where I would end up. At night I did some journaling, watched some masala flicks on cable TV and finally fall asleep around midnight. I got up around 6.30 am and went ... read more

Hi everyone, I have returned from the mountains and the land of dial up internet connections, so some of these entries may be a little out of order because I have to do them all at once. As RUCHI is an NGO, they kind of have to schmooze around to get funding for their projects. One of their biggest partners is the Rotary Club. They have a lot of connections with the rotary club in New Zealand, and then connections with several India clubs in the surrounding area in Himachal Pradesh. So we took a trip to Kasauli, a town about 20 km (12 miles) away to give a presentation on a water project RUCHI built with rotary club funding (more about the project later). Now, you may think, 12 miles, that's so close by. That's ... read more

It was that moment again. After working for couple of months at an IT magazines group I finally decided to quit because it was not giving me anything remotely close to what I call creative satisfaction. When I am in such a state of mind, I usually head for some hill station to rejuvenate myself and indulge in some chintan (thinking) about my future in my yet-to-take-off writing career. My usual cottage in Mussoorrie was full so I decided to try this time a place known for its peace and ‘doing nothing’ feeling: Kasauli in Himachal Pradesh. After e-mailing my resignation letter the previous night I set out on my journey early morning, reaching railway station at 5.30 AM to catch the Himalayan Queen Express train. As usual, the auto driver quoted higher fare and then ... read more
