MGF Mall
Inside the MGF Metropolitan Mall I made my first trip to the malls of Gurgaon today. Gurgaon is known as the "Mall Capital of India" and already has about 20 malls open with new malls being built right and left, each larger than the last, and each claiming to be the best. There will eventually be 127 malls in total!
I need a few essentails for my apartment, assuming I ever get one, so I decided to do a bit of shopping. I had no idea what to expect and asked people at work which mall was the best. Several people said the MGF Mega Mall so I set out for there. Mukesh, who's been driving me to work all week, agreed to drive me today as well. I told him the MGF Mega Mall and we set off. I'm not sure I ended up at the correct mall - I think we went to the MGF Metropolitan Mall instead. There was one store in particular recommended and it wasn't in the mall we went to. There was another mall across the street and I went there also. It was actually better than the first mall and had some nice stores.
The MGF mall was busy and crowded and had four levels with a food court and a big children's play area. There were two McDonalds in the mall and I had a McChicken burger and fries for lunch. Most of the stores were small and very specilaized. I did find a good bookstore with lots of novels in English. They were between $6-10 which isn't too bad. Any time I went into any store, the staff followed me around like I was going to steal everything in site! I forgot about that from last time.
I did find one home store and bought some sheets. All of the sheet "sets" contain only one sheet and one or two pillowcases since you're supposed to use a duvet with them. The sheets cost about $10 so I figured I'd just buy two sets. I got a jungle print with blue leaves and green vines first and then found a solid blue sheet to go with it. The solid blue is a "luxury sheet" as it's a 200 thread count! I also bought a shower curtain, a bath mat, and a small pillow so I can at least sleep and shower in my new place.
The malls have food courts plus restaurants and movie theaters so I guess they will be a place to hang out while I learn my way around Gurgaon. Delhi has so many places to go and, so far, it doesn't seem like Gurgaon has as many other than the malls. The cinema at the MGF Mall was showing the new Harry Potter movie, "Surf's Up", "Ratatuie" (or however you spell it), Rush Hour 3 plus many Bollywood movies. I couldn't figure out how much the tickets cost, but there was certainly a good selection.
I'm feeling a bit house bound at my hotel and also anxious to get into my own place. I went for a walk last Sunday, but there's not much to see within walking distance. I couldn't even find a little market that sells soda and snacks which surprised me since these are all over Dlehi. Ashish said that he's worked out the details of my apartment, but didn't give me a specific timeline. He also sent me a list of furniture and other things for the apartment and I said it looked OK. I'd like to pick out some of the things myself, but again, I got no details about what was happening or when or how. I've tried asking questions, but it doesn't seem to get me anywhere. I did ask for a futon instead of a couch in case anyone ever decides to visit (HINT, HINT). I saw the perfect one in the mall today and it cost way less than the couch Ashish proposed. We shall see how it all plays out! Stay tuned...
